Fails to update from Windows 11 22H2 to 24H or 25H

When I go to click update via Windows upgrade, it tells me "Your version of Windows has reached the end of service" and it will not update.

When I use the Window11InstallerAssistant, it only updates to 22H2 and no later.

I've not downloaded the ISO file yet, as I don't know how to mount it.

Windows 11 Home, 22H2, OS 22621.4317, 64 bit operating system, 8GB.

Hi. I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

Performing an in-place upgrade using the ISO might be your best option. However, please share a screenshot of your system information so I can see if there is anything that might be preventing the upgrade from being made available to you.

    • Press "Windows + R", type msinfo32 and press Enter.

Maximize the window and use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

Also. Do you have a third-party antivirus installed? If yes, which one?

    Looking forward to your reply.

Windows 11 22H2 is out of support, and devices on Home editions that are not managed by IT are expected to move to the latest available version automatically. Since Windows Update is not offering the upgrade and the Installation Assistant is not moving past 22H2, the supported next step is an in-place upgrade using the Windows 11 ISO.

    Steps:

    1. Download the Windows 11 ISO from the Windows 11 download page.
    2. Make sure the ISO matches the same language currently used for the Windows interface.
    3. Before starting setup:
      • Disconnect from the internet.
      • Disconnect external devices except mouse and keyboard.
      • Temporarily disable any third-party antivirus.
    4. In File Explorer, double-click the ISO file. This mounts it as a virtual drive automatically.
    5. Open the mounted drive and run Setup.exe.
    6. Choose the option to keep files and apps.
    7. Complete the upgrade.

That process is treated like an upgrade, not a clean install, when the keep files and apps option is selected.

If the ISO upgrade still fails, one accepted troubleshooting path is:

    1. Open an elevated Command Prompt.
    2. Run:
         DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    3. After it finishes, run:
         sfc /scannow

    4. Retry the ISO-based upgrade.

If Windows Update still shows end of service and does not offer a newer version, another accepted fix for a similar 22H2 case was to enable and run the Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser task in Task Scheduler, then restart Windows and check for updates again.

    Path:

    • Task Scheduler
    • Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser
    • Enable
    • Run

For 25H2 specifically, the enablement package path requires the device to already be on Windows 11 version 24H2 with the prerequisite cumulative update installed, so it is not a direct path from 22H2.
