I'm trying to understand how to detach my payment method. Recurring charges were turned off and my subscriptions were cancelled but I cannot detach my payment method. Will I be charged at the time my free trial period ends?

I'm trying to understand how to detach my payment method for a Dynamics 365 Sales Premium. Recurring charges were turned off and my subscriptions were cancelled but I cannot detach my payment method. Will I be charged at the time my free trial period ends? How do I detach my payment method?

    Dear @G

If you have already turned off recurring billing and canceled the Dynamics 365 Sales Premium trial subscription, you should not be charged when the free trial period ends.

Regarding the payment method, Microsoft may prevent you from removing it if it is still associated with an active subscription, billing profile, or billing account, even when the subscription is in a canceled or expiring state.

    • You can only delete a payment method that isn't attached to a subscription or billing profile. This applies to all subscriptions, regardless of their status.
    • In some cases, you may need to wait until the trial has fully expired before the payment method can be detached.
    • For more information, please refer to Delete a payment method

If recurring billing is turned off for the free trial, the trial is not canceled immediately, but it remains active until it expires. For a free trial, turning off recurring billing before the trial ends stops future charges. If the trial has no payment method associated with it, it can simply be allowed to expire and no charge occurs.

For Microsoft business subscriptions, a payment method can only be deleted or detached when it is no longer attached to any subscription or billing profile. If it is still attached, it must first be replaced with another payment method or fully removed from all linked subscriptions or billing profiles.

In the Microsoft 365 admin center, the supported path is:

    1. Go to the admin center.
    2. If using Simplified view, select Products > View payment methods.
    3. If using Dashboard view, go to Bills & payments > Payment methods.
    4. Select the three dots next to the payment method.
    5. If subscriptions or billing profiles are still linked, complete the Delete payment method flow by replacing that payment method with another one first.
    6. If nothing is linked, select Delete.

If detaching is still blocked, one documented cause is that the payment method is still attached to a billing profile or subscription even after cancellation. Another documented blocker is having an Entra Free subscription in the billing account. In that case, the last payment method on file cannot be deleted or detached unless the tenant is deleted.

For Azure-style billing profiles, detaching can also be blocked by:

    • outstanding charges
    • recurring charges
    • pending charges
    • active subscriptions

If the free trial is for a Microsoft 365 business subscription, the key billing point is: before the trial ends, turn off recurring billing to avoid being charged when the one-month trial ends.

Important: back up any data that must be kept before the trial ends, because after the trial ends, trial account information and data are permanently deleted.
