Microsoft Home Not Working Because of Forced Attempt at 365

I purchased a lifetime license for Microsoft Home in 2023 and as of today I cannot access any of my ALREADY PAID FOR services because the apps are continuously attempting to make me subscribe to Microsoft 365.

I do not want a new service. I do not want any change. I have already paid for the product I want and need and it is no longer allowing me to use my purchased product. How do I get it to acknowledge my established license and stop forcing 365 on me?

This is borderline fraud. I want an answer to get this to stop and allow me back to the products I, again, have already paid for and own.

If you are running Big Sur or earlier, Microsoft has reduced Office to view-only status. Here is Microsoft's page announcing their abandonment of users on older Macs, with disingenuous advice about upgrading your macOS version: Update Microsoft 365 or Office on your macOS or iOS device

As alternatives to Office for Mac under Big Sur, you can use Word for the web or Google Docs. For desktop software, take a look at open-source LibreOffice, which has good compatibility with Office file formats.

If you're adventurous, Open Core Legacy Patcher allows you to run newer versions of macOS on older Macs. You can install up to Sequoia (Tahoe is not supported). I have a 2011 MacBook Pro running Sequoia and the current edition of Office.

If you are running Monterey or newer and are using Office 2021 or better, you may be experiencing a bug in a recent update. Please try the steps on this page: Unknown Error 0x0 or License not found error in Microsoft 365 or Office running on macOS

    1

Please provide a screenshot of the problem you are seeing in the Office apps.

    2

At the top left of your Desktop, click the Apple icon and select 'About this Mac', what version of MacOS is installed on your computer?

    3

Log into your Microsoft account on this link, do you find your permanent Office licence listed there, and if so, what version of Office is listed on your account.

For a one-time Office for Mac purchase, this usually means the installed apps are not recognizing the existing license, not that a Microsoft 365 subscription is required.

    Try this in order:

    1. Check that the one-time purchase is attached to the correct Microsoft account.
Sign in to Services & subscriptions and confirm the Office purchase appears there. If it does not appear under the account currently being used, the apps may be signed in with the wrong account.
    2. In Word on Mac, refresh the license.
Go to Word > About Microsoft Word.
Next to Belongs to:, select More Info.
Then select Refresh License and sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the original purchase.
    3. Make sure the apps are signed in with the correct account.
In the top-right corner of the Microsoft 365 app, verify the signed-in account is the one that owns the license. If the wrong account is signed in, Office can show activation or subscription prompts.
    4. If the problem continues, uninstall Office for Mac and reinstall it from the Microsoft account Subscriptions / Services & subscriptions page, not from the Mac App Store.
The Mac App Store version can require a Microsoft 365 subscription, while reinstalling from the Microsoft account uses the license already associated with the purchase.
    5. If reinstalling does not fix it, use the Mac License Removal Tool, restart the Mac, and then activate again by signing in with the original purchase account.
This removes saved activation data on the Mac. It does not remove the purchase, but access to the original Microsoft account is required to reactivate.
    6. If the apps still show Unlicensed Product or similar, check the subscription/license status and activation guidance.
Microsoft’s activation guidance also recommends closing all Office apps, checking Services & subscriptions, renewing only if the product is actually expired, and then reopening the apps.

If the purchase was a one-time Office license and it is visible in Services & subscriptions, the expected fix is usually license refresh, reinstalling from the Microsoft account page, or clearing stale Mac licensing data.
