Windows 11 Home was activated normally on this PC before I updated the BIOS. Immediately after the BIOS update, Windows reported that it was no longer activated.### Environment

  • Windows 11 Home (Core edition)
  • License channel: RETAIL
  • Product Key Channel: Retail
  • Current License Status: Notification
  • Activation error: 0x803F7001
  • slmgr /dlv Notification Reason: 0xC004F034

What happened

  1. Windows 11 Home was activated before the BIOS update.
  2. I updated the system BIOS.
  3. After rebooting, Windows reported that it was no longer activated.
  4. Running slmgr /ato fails with error 0x803F7001.

While troubleshooting, I checked the devices associated with my Microsoft account. There were two entries, one shown as Windows 11 and another as Windows Core. I accidentally removed the old Windows Core entry.

Troubleshooting performed

  • Ran the Windows Activation Troubleshooter.
  • Signed in using the Microsoft account previously associated with the PC.
  • Ran slmgr /ato.
  • Checked the license using slmgr /dlv and slmgr /dli.
  • Checked for an OEM firmware key using OA3xOriginalProductKey; no key was returned.
  • Confirmed that the installed Windows license reports the RETAIL channel.

Question

How can I restore the digital license that was associated with this PC before the BIOS update? Is it possible to re-associate the previous Windows 11 Home activation with the current hardware identity?

    Hi Silver

I understand your frustration. For reference, a BIOS update causing Windows to lose activation does not necessarily mean the license is permanently lost. If you decide to revisit the issue, Microsoft Support can review the activation record for a Retail license and determine whether the digital license can be re-associated with the device.

You can contact Microsoft Support through the Get Help app in Windows or via Microsoft Support Contact.

As this is a public community forum, contributors and moderators do not have access to Microsoft licensing systems, activation records, or account information, so we cannot directly restore or reassign licenses.

If you choose to pursue the issue later, feel free to return with any updates from Support. Thank you!
