Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Dear @vvijay
I would be happy to help address your questions regarding the Microsoft Fabric trial and working with Power BI Free.
Based on the screenshot, your profile displays: "Your free Power BI trial has expired. Additional free trials are not available to you at this time."
When you manually disable or cancel an active trial, Microsoft's system registers the trial period as expired or exhausted. Trial licenses are enforced at both the individual user account level and the tenant capacity level. Once a trial account or tenant capacity is cancelled/expired, Microsoft does not automatically issue a new free trial on that same account or tenant.
Can You Work with Power BI Free?
Yes, you can still use Power BI for free, but with specific feature limitations:
- Power BI Desktop: You can download and use Power BI Desktop completely free without a paid subscription to connect to data, build reports, and transform models locally.
- Power BI Service (Fabric Portal): With a Power BI (Free) license type, you can publish reports to "My Workspace" and view them online.
- Key Limitations of Free License: You cannot share reports with other users or view reports shared by others in standard workspaces without a paid Power BI Pro or Premium Per User (PPU) license, or unless the workspace is hosted on a paid Fabric/Premium capacity.
How to Fix It & Start Working with Power BI (Free)
Step 1: Re-enable the Power BI (Free) License (Please ask the administrator to perform that action for you)
You do not need a paid or trial subscription to use standard Power BI functionality.
- Go to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
- Navigate to Billing > Purchase services (or Get services).
- Search for Power BI (Free) and assign the free license directly to your user account.
Step 2: Enable Fabric / Trial Permissions in Tenant Settings
If you are the Tenant Administrator, ensure self-service trials are allowed:
- Open the Power BI / Fabric Admin Portal.
- Go to Tenant settings.
- Under Fabric features, set Users can create Fabric items to Enabled.
- Under Help and support settings, set Users can try Microsoft Fabric paid features to Enabled.
Please refer to this document: Enable Microsoft Fabric for your organization
Step 3: Trigger the Fabric Trial via Item Creation
- Instead of looking for the "Start Trial" button in the Account Manager:
- Open a workspace in Microsoft Fabric/Power BI.
- Attempt to create a Fabric item (such as a Lakehouse or Data Factory Pipeline).
- A prompt will automatically pop up asking you to upgrade/assign the workspace to a free Fabric trial capacity.
