Service-area business synced from Google has no address — Bing assigned a fallback location 30 miles away, and the imported record is locked

I manage the Bing Places listing for Arkwood Transportation, a chauffeur and private car service based in San Gabriel, California, serving the San Gabriel Valley and greater Los Angeles area.

  • Live listing: [PII Removed]
  • Dashboard entity ID: [PII Removed]
  • Bing Places account identity: [PII Removed]

Please note: my Bing Places account is authenticated through Google sign-in, not a Microsoft account — there is no Microsoft account on that address. The account I am posting from here is separate. I mention this because the listing was imported from Google, the account itself signs in through Google, and support told me an "account limitation" prevents manual correction; those three facts may be related.

The problem

This is a service-area business. Customers do not visit an address, so the street address is hidden on the Google Business Profile, as Google requires for this business type.

The listing was added to my Bing Places dashboard by importing/syncing from that Google Business Profile. Because the synced data contained no visible street address, the Bing listing appears to have been assigned a fallback location rather than the correct one. It currently displays at approximately 33.790, -118.180 — in the Central neighborhood of Long Beach — and the listing itself is labeled "Central, CA."

That location is roughly 30 miles from the actual business and entirely outside the service area.

The Address field under Basic details in my dashboard is completely blank, which supports this reading — there is no address data in the record for Bing to geocode, so a location appears to have been generated instead.

The categories are also wrong. The listing currently shows: Automotive, Limo services, Transportation, Airport shuttles. The primary appears to be Automotive, which is far too broad to be useful. The correct primary is chauffeur service. If Bing's category taxonomy has no exact equivalent, Limo services is the closest available match and I would like that set as primary instead.

What I have already tried

  1. Disabled Google Business Profile sync in Bing Places. The dashboard now shows "Google sync disabled," but the location and category fields remain locked and uneditable.
  2. Attempted to claim the listing from the Bing Maps listing page via "Manage business" — it returns me to my existing dashboard listing.
  3. Attempted "Add/claim single business" from the dashboard three-dot menu. Searching for the business and clicking "Claim listing" returns me to the dashboard with no claim flow initiated.
  4. "Suggest an edit" on the public listing offers no option to correct the location or category — the only available action is to report the business as closed, which does not apply.
  5. Contacted Bing Places chat support. The agent stated that manual correction could not be applied due to an account limitation, and that the claiming process was unavailable due to ongoing system maintenance. I was told to expect a follow-up email within 24–48 hours. No ticket number was issued and no follow-up has been received.

My understanding of the root cause

Because the listing is already associated with my account as an imported record, the claim flow has nothing to claim — but imported records cannot be edited directly. The result is a listing permanently stuck with a fabricated location.

What I'm asking for

Either of the following would resolve this:

  1. Correct the listing's location to San Gabriel, California on the backend, and set the primary category to Limo services (or the nearest chauffeur-service equivalent in Bing's taxonomy); or
  2. Detach the imported record from my account, or convert it to a directly-claimed listing, so I can correct these fields myself. I am willing to re-verify by postcard or phone.

I would also like to set the location display to city and ZIP code rather than no location at all. My understanding is that Bing permits service-area businesses to display city and ZIP, and doing so should prevent this fallback geocoding from recurring on future syncs.

I would prefer not to delete the record from my account if that risks generating a duplicate listing that then requires a merge.

Thank you.

    Hi Chris

Thank you for the detailed information.

Based on your description, this appears to be a Bing Places for Business listing-management issue rather than a Bing Maps consumer issue. Community members here do not have access to Bing Places records and cannot make backend changes to a listing's location, category assignment, claim status, or synchronization settings.

You have already completed the standard troubleshooting steps, including disabling Google Business Profile sync, attempting to reclaim the listing, and contacting Bing Places support. If the listing remains locked after sync has been disabled, that typically requires review by the Bing Places team because community moderators cannot remove sync locks or modify imported records.

Bing Places documentation states that service-area businesses must still have a valid address on file for verification purposes, while allowing the address to be hidden and service areas displayed instead. It also supports showing service areas when an address is hidden.

Since you already contacted Bing Places support and did not receive the expected follow-up, I recommend contacting support again from within the Bing Places dashboard and referencing:

    • Listing ID
    • The incorrect map location
    • The blank Address field
    • The fact that Google sync is now disabled but the record remains locked

Bing Places support can be reached through the Bing Places portal while signed in to the account that owns the listing.

Hopefully a Bing Places engineer can review the record and determine whether the imported listing needs to be converted to a directly managed listing or corrected on the backend.
