AADSTS5000228 – Unable to access newly created Azure tenant and remove payment method

I recently created a new Microsoft Azure tenant and I am the sole administrator.

After creating the tenant, I became unable to access it. Every attempt to sign in to Azure results in the following error:

AADSTS5000228: Access to tenant is denied.

Because the tenant is inaccessible, I cannot access the Azure Portal, create an Azure support request, check or cancel any Azure subscription, or manage/remove the payment method that was entered during Azure account registration.

I no longer wish to use this Azure tenant.

I need Microsoft's assistance to:

  1. Verify whether there is any active Azure subscription associated with the inaccessible tenant.
  2. Cancel any active subscription if one exists.
  3. Help me permanently remove/detach the payment method associated with the Azure billing account.
  4. Confirm that there will be no future charges.

I am unable to open a normal Azure support ticket because the AADSTS5000228 error prevents me from accessing the tenant.

Please let me know how I can provide the tenant/account information privately for verification.

    Dear Papa Julliet,

Good day! Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum!

Based on your description, I understand that you are sole administrator and completely locked out of your azure tenant because all login attempts result in the occurrence of error AADSTS5000228. You no longer wish to utilize this tenant, wish to remove the payment method, and need to confirm that no future charges will be incurred.

Regarding your situation, error code AADSTS5000228, is an Azure AD sign‑in error that indicates the account cannot be authorized because of missing or invalid administrator consent. In practice, this means your tenant is rejecting the login attempt due to either misconfigured service principal permissions or the fact that no valid administrator account exists to grant consent.

According to your requirements, please try to find the related hotline number to call the frontline let them raise a ticket for you: Technical or Sales support phone numbers (for Work account, scroll down to find your region's number)

Important Note to reach a live support agent: Sometimes, you would hear the computer-generated voice at first, please kindly wait for it to end, and if an agent is available, you would be directed to them and get your support. Depending on your country or region, when you call the support number, you may hear an introduction of about 30 seconds such as "You can visit the link...". You can ignore this introduction and wait until you are presented with the options. Then press "1" as a business email user, and again "1" for technical help.

If you experience difficulties reaching Microsoft by phone, you may also consider creating a new free azure account and submitting an Azure support request regarding billing or subscription issues there.

Furthermore, I suggest locking the card to prevent any unauthorized charges until you have verified that no fees will be applied to the locked tenant; you may then unlock it upon receiving confirmation from Microsoft.

I hope the information provided above will be helpful for your situation.
