Automatically manage status of report

I work with Excel for financial reporting, and it would be really helpful if Excel had a built-in way to mark a reporting period as “Closed” and automatically prevent changes to all data belonging to that period. For example, once March is finalized, Excel could automatically treat the March columns or rows as read-only, while April remains editable. Ideally, this could work without manually selecting cells, locking them, and protecting the worksheet each time. This would probably only be useful for a small group of Finance and Accounting users, but it could make period-end reporting much easier to manage.

    Dear Doki Lewis,

At the moment, Excel’s documented protection options require users to define which cells or ranges are locked and then enable worksheet protection. There is no built-in reporting-period status that automatically locks the corresponding data based on a month being closed. Worksheet protection is mainly intended to prevent changes to locked cells, rather than to manage a financial close workflow automatically.
