For Microsoft 365 Family on macOS, the most common reasons are that the Copilot entry point moved, the license needs to refresh, Office is not on the latest build, or privacy settings are blocking Copilot.
Try these steps in order:
- Check the new Copilot location
In Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, Copilot may no longer appear on the ribbon. Look for the Copilot Dynamic Action Button in the lower-right corner of the document, workbook, or presentation.
- Confirm the account has Copilot access
The button only appears for users who have access to Copilot through a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription or Copilot license. In Microsoft 365 Family scenarios, Copilot access may depend on which account is signed in.
- Refresh the license on Mac
In any Microsoft 365 app:
- Select the app name in the macOS menu bar, such as Word or PowerPoint
- Select About <app name>
- Select More Info...
- Select Refresh License
Then close all Microsoft 365 apps and reopen them.
- Update Office for Mac
Make sure the apps are on the latest build. Outdated builds can prevent the Copilot button from appearing.
- Check privacy settings on Mac
In Word:
- Select Word > Preferences > Privacy
- Make sure Experiences that analyze your content is turned on
- Make sure All connected experiences is turned on
- If using the web apps, refresh the browser
If Copilot is missing in the web version, refresh the page. If it still does not appear, third-party cookies may be blocked, which can prevent license validation.
- If the ribbon button is missing but Copilot works elsewhere
That can be expected. Copilot in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint has been consolidated into the Dynamic Action Button, and the capabilities did not change.
