When I run Word on my laptop, I get an error message that says, "We're sorry, but Word has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. Word will need to be closed as a result." I then click repair now and it doesn't do anything, so I open Word back up and then close it. But every time I open Word, I get the error message.

First, make sure your Office license is attached to your Microsoft account. https://account.microsoft.com/account

If it is, do an ONLINE repair. See https://support.office.com/article/7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b

    Hi Lydia,

    Thank you for reaching out.

From what you've shared, the AI response seems to cover the most common troubleshooting steps for this type of issue. Since your Microsoft Word is showing an error message asking you to repair Office, I'd recommend trying the suggested steps first, such as running an online repair and isolating Word add-ins.

If the issue persists, please try the following steps:

    1. Reset Word’s Normal template

A damaged Normal.dotm file can make Word fail every time it starts. Renaming it is safe because Word generates a fresh copy automatically.

    • Close Word and Outlook completely.
    • Press Windows key + R.
    • Paste: %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates
    • Find Normal.dotm.
    • Rename it to Normal.old
    • Start Word normally.
    1. Empty Word’s Startup folder
    • Close Word.
    • Press Windows key + R.
    • Open: %appdata%\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP
    • Create a temporary folder on your desktop.
    • Move everything from the STARTUP folder into that temporary folder.
    • Open Word normally.
    • If Word works, move the files back one at a time to identify the problematic file.

I hope this information is helpful. Please try these steps and let me know how it goes.

Thank you for your time and patience.

The Repair Now button in that error dialog often does not fully fix Word. The recommended next step is a full Office Online Repair.

    1. Close Word.
    2. Open Windows Settings.
    3. Go to:
      • Windows 11: Apps > Installed apps
      • Windows 10: Apps > Apps & Features
    4. Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
    5. Select it, then choose Modify.
    6. If prompted, choose:
      • Online Repair > Repair for Click-to-Run installs
      • Repair > Continue for MSI-based installs
    7. Follow the on-screen steps, then restart the PC if prompted.

    Notes:

    • Online Repair is more thorough than the quick repair from the error popup.
    • This repairs the entire Office suite, not just Word.

If Word still fails after repair, test whether an add-in is causing the crash:

    1. Press Windows + R.
    2. Type winword /safe and press Enter.
    3. If Word opens in Safe Mode, go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
    4. In Manage, select the add-in type and click Go.
    5. Clear one add-in, click OK, then restart Word normally.
    6. Repeat one at a time until the problematic add-in is identified.

If Word does not open in Safe Mode, repair Office again or uninstall and reinstall Office.
