Windows Update tells me that my version is out of service, but will not update. I've gone through all the troubleshooting steps I can find on Windows Support site to no avail. The troubleshooter says it detected a problem but could not resolve it. I currently have Windows 11 Pro Version 22h2.

    Hi Apollo,

Is your PC fully Windows 11 compatible?

    Run this: https://aka.ms/GetPCHealthCheckApp

If it's compatible then try using this to update:

Windows 11 Pro 22H2 is out of service, and when that happens Windows Update may stop offering the newer feature update through Settings. Since the built-in troubleshooter already detected a problem but could not fix it, use this order of recovery:

    1. Back up personal files first. Microsoft recommends backing up files before deeper update troubleshooting or reinstall steps.
    2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter again from the current Windows 11 path to confirm no new issue is detected:
      • Start > Settings > System
      • Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters
      • Find Windows Update > Run
    3. Check basic update blockers:
      • Restart the PC.
      • Verify internet connectivity in Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Wi‑Fi.
      • Confirm enough free disk space: at least 16 GB for 32-bit or 20 GB for 64-bit upgrades.
    4. Reset Windows Update components manually. This uses administrator Command Prompt and is recommended only if comfortable with command-line steps.
      • Open Command Prompt as administrator.
      • Run these commands one at a time:
             net stop bits
             net stop wuauserv
             ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
             ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
             net start bits
             net start wuauserv

      • Restart the PC.
      • Then go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
    5. Repair Windows system files. This also requires administrator Command Prompt.
      • Run:
             DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
             sfc /scannow

      • Wait for both to complete, then try Windows Update again.
    6. If third-party antivirus or security software is installed, temporarily uninstall it, update Windows, then reinstall it afterward. Microsoft notes that some third-party security tools can block Windows 11 updates. Make sure any product keys or reinstall steps are available first.
    7. If Windows Update still will not move off 22H2, perform an in-place upgrade to the latest Windows 11 release using Microsoft’s public installation tools. Accepted Microsoft Q&A guidance for this exact 22H2 out-of-service scenario recommends using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or an ISO to upgrade while keeping personal files and apps.
      • Download the Windows 11 installation tool from Microsoft’s software download page.
      • Run the tool and choose the option to keep personal files and apps.
      • If using an ISO, mount the ISO in File Explorer and run Setup.exe from it.
    8. If the in-place upgrade fails, the remaining supported path is a clean installation of Windows 11. This is more disruptive and can remove apps and data if not backed up properly.

The most likely fix here is the in-place upgrade path, because 22H2 is already out of service and normal Windows Update may no longer advance the device to a supported release.
