My Microsoft 365 products have all changed to view only. I have updated my Mac to latest software. How to I reactivate Microsoft 365?

I received an email from Microsoft asking me to update my Mac to macOS 12 or later. I have done this. I have updated my Microsoft 365 Apps with Apple Support. I am still only in 'view only' mode. I cannot edit my files. How do I get Microsoft 365 working again?

This is a widely reported problem after the July update.

If you have now upgraded your version of MacOS, what OS version is now installed on your Mac, at the top left of your Mac desktop, click the Apple icon and select 'About this Mac', what version of MacOS is installed on your computer?

If Microsoft 365 on Mac is still in view-only mode after updating macOS and the apps, use this sequence:

    1. Confirm the Mac meets the minimum supported versions:
      • macOS 12 (Monterey) or later
      • Microsoft 365 app version 16.83 or later
    2. Quit each Office app completely:
      • Use Command + Q or select the app name in the menu bar and choose Quit.
    3. Reopen an Office app, then go to the app’s Account settings:
      • Sign out of Microsoft 365
      • Sign back in with the Microsoft account that has the subscription
    4. If the apps still stay in reduced functionality mode, restart the Mac and try again.
    5. If activation prompts continue after that, remove the Office license files and reactivate:
      • Run the License Removal Tool
      • Open Keychain Access and delete:
        • Microsoft Office Identities Cache 3
        • Microsoft Office Identities Settings 3
        • Microsoft Office Ticket Cache
      • Restart the Mac
      • Open any Microsoft 365 app and sign in again to reactivate
    6. If the issue started after the July 13, 2026 certificate-related update and the apps remain view-only even after updating, a reported resolution is to completely uninstall Office, then reinstall it.

Files are safe. This issue affects macOS and iOS; Windows and Android are not affected.
