    Hi, @Fiona Middleton

Personal Microsoft accounts and work/business accounts are separate.

If that email address or its domain is still recognized by Microsoft as belonging to a work or school organization, you may not be able to use it to create a new personal Microsoft account. In that case, using a different personal email address or creating a new Outlook.com address would be the simplest option.

    To help narrow this down:

    1. What is the part after the @ in the email address? You can leave out everything before @ for privacy.
    2. What exact message do you get when you try to create the personal Microsoft account?
    3. Is the previous business Microsoft 365 account/organization still active, or has it already been removed by the business administrator?

Click "Add comment" to let me know.

    Thanks!

Use the email address only if it has already been fully removed from the old account. A Microsoft account email address cannot be used on two accounts at the same time, and addresses used for Microsoft accounts cannot be reused while still attached to another account.

    Recommended path:

    1. Try creating the personal Microsoft account:
      • Go to Create an account.
      • Enter that email address.
      • If accepted, continue with password, name, country/region, birthdate, captcha, and email verification.
    2. If the email is reported as already in use:
      • It is still attached to another Microsoft account or alias.
      • Sign in to the old personal Microsoft account, if one exists, and go to Edit account info / Add email.
      • Add a different email address as an alias.
      • Make the new alias the primary sign-in.
      • Then remove the old email address from that account.
    3. After the old email is removed, create the new personal account again with that email address.

    Important details:

    • A Microsoft account can use an email from another provider as the username.
    • If the old account was closed, the address still might not be available yet.
    • If the address was previously linked to a business/work account, the safest approach is to free that address from any personal Microsoft account first, then create or use the correct account separately.
    • If a new address is needed instead, an Outlook.com address can be created during account setup.

To create the new personal account, the supported steps are:

    1. Select Create an account or go to https://signup.live.com.
    2. Enter the email address.
    3. Create a password and select Next.
    4. Enter first and last name.
    5. Select country or region and birthdate.
    6. Complete the captcha.
    7. Verify the email address with the code sent by Microsoft.
