Common reasons are:
- The subscription is active, but Word is signed in with the wrong account
- Go to Services & subscriptions and sign in with the Microsoft account used to buy Microsoft 365.
- Confirm that Microsoft 365 appears there as active.
- If it does not appear, a different Microsoft account was likely used.
- Word has not refreshed the license yet
- Open Word.
- Go to File > Account.
- Under Product Information, select Update License if it appears.
- If multiple accounts are signed in, sign out of them and sign back in with the account that shows the active subscription.
- The subscription payment has a problem
- If Word shows “ACCOUNT NOTICE. We've run into a problem with your Microsoft 365 subscription and need your help to fix it.”, this is often caused by a payment issue.
- Go to Payment options and check whether the payment method has an error.
- If needed, update the payment method, then restart Word.
- The subscription was renewed, but not fully activated
- If Microsoft 365 was bought as a retail box or card, the subscription does not start until the product key is redeemed.
- Check the renewal status online first. If the expiration date is wrong, contact Microsoft Support.
- Office is in reduced functionality mode
- When Office is not activated, documents can still be opened and printed, but editing and creating new files are blocked.
- This usually appears as Unlicensed Product or another activation notice.
- The installed Office apps need to be reinstalled
- If the subscription is active but subscription features still are not available, uninstall and reinstall Microsoft 365.
- On Windows, Microsoft provides an uninstall troubleshooter for Microsoft 365, Office 2021, Office 2019, and Office 2016. Restart the PC after uninstalling, then reinstall Microsoft 365.
Also check the exact subscription type. Microsoft 365 Basic does not include the desktop Word app. If the purchase was Basic, Word desktop will not activate; only the web version can be used.
If the subscription is Family or Personal and the notice continues after checking the account, payment, and license refresh, contact support. If this is a work or school subscription, contact the Microsoft 365 admin or IT department.
