Exit all Office apps and then try an Online Repair; see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/lifecycle/repair-an-office-application .

Before you begin, verify that you can access your Microsoft account at https://account.microsoft.com/services and that Office is associated with it. That way, you ensure that you can reinstall Office, which is usually the final step in an Online Repair.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Restart the PC Wait a few minutes, restart the device, sign back in, and try Word again.
    2. Repair Office On Windows 11:
      • Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
      • Find Microsoft 365 or Office.
      • Select the three dots > Modify.
      On Windows 10:
      • Right-click Start and select Apps and Features.
      • Find Microsoft 365 or Office.
      • Select Modify.
      Then:
      • If prompted, choose Quick Repair first.
      • If Word still does not open, run Online Repair.
Note: Online Repair fixes more issues, but it takes longer.
    3. Update Office If any Office app opens:
      • Open the app.
      • Go to File > Account.
      • Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
    4. Start Word in Safe Mode This checks whether an add-in is causing the problem.
      • Select Search, type run, and open Run.
      • Type winword /safe and press Enter.
If Word opens in Safe Mode:
      • Go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
      • In Manage, select COM Add-ins or Word Add-ins, then select Go.
      • Clear one add-in, select OK, and restart Word normally.
      • Repeat one at a time until the faulty add-in is found.
    5. If Safe Mode does not work The issue is likely not caused by add-ins. Use Online Repair if not already done.
    6. If the problem continues
      • Install Windows updates.
      • Check for updated drivers, especially video card, printer, mouse, and keyboard drivers.
      • If needed, uninstall and reinstall Office using the uninstall troubleshooter.
