I have 3 laptops on my account. My account is set up on autopay every month. But all of a sudden Word is not working on one of the laptops. At the top of the screen it says "Unlicensed Product". I can see this laptop under my devices on my account. Any idea why one laptop would be doing this when the other two are fine?

    Hi B Lockard,

Based on the information provided, since your Microsoft 365 subscription is active and the other devices are working normally, the issue may be related to the activation status stored on the affected laptop rather than the subscription itself.

As an additional check that has helped in similar situations, you could review the accounts connected to Office on the affected device:

    1. Open Word and select File > Account.
    2. Under User Information and Connected Services, look for any old, work/school, or unused Microsoft accounts.
    3. Sign out of any unnecessary accounts and keep only the account associated with your Microsoft 365 subscription.
    4. Close all Office applications, reopen Word, and allow it to refresh the license status.

You can also compare the File > Account page between the working laptops and the affected laptop to see if there are differences in the signed-in account or license information.

I hope this helps point you in the right direction. Let me know if you need further assistance, feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Add Answer" if you cannot add comment so your response will be visible. Thanks for your effort.

Yes. A single laptop can show Unlicensed Product even when the subscription is active and other devices still work. Common causes in this scenario are:

    • Word is signed in with the wrong Microsoft account on that laptop.
    • There are multiple Office installations on that laptop causing an activation conflict.
    • Office on that laptop needs to refresh activation or repair the installation.
    • If a subscription/payment issue develops, Office can eventually go into reduced functionality mode, but since the other two laptops still work, the affected device is more likely to have a local sign-in or activation problem.

    Recommended order:

    1. Check the signed-in account in Word
      • Open Word on the affected laptop.
      • If prompted, sign in with the Microsoft account used to buy Microsoft 365.
      • If unsure which account owns the subscription, check Services & subscriptions and confirm the subscription appears there.
      • If Office says “We couldn't find any Office products”, the wrong account is being used.
    2. Confirm the subscription is still active
      • Close all Microsoft 365 apps.
      • Go to Services & subscriptions.
      • Review the subscription under Subscriptions or Cancelled subscriptions.
      • If it expired, renew it, then reopen Word.
    3. Check for multiple Office copies on that laptop
      • In Windows, open Control Panel.
      • Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
      • Search for office.
      • If more than one Office version appears, uninstall the version not being used.
      • Restart the laptop, then open Word and sign in again.
    4. Run Office as administrator once
      • Close all Office apps.
      • Open Start, type Word.
      • Right-click Word and select Run as administrator.
      • This can fix permission-related activation issues.
    5. Check date, time, and time zone
      • In Windows, select the date/time in the lower-right corner.
      • Open Date and time settings.
      • Turn on Set time automatically and, if available, Set time zone automatically.
      • Reopen Word.
    6. Use the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter
      • Run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter on the same Windows PC with the problem.
      • It requires Windows 10 or later.
    7. If this started randomly, try reactivation
      • In the Office banner, select Reactivate if shown.
      • Or sign out of all Microsoft 365 apps on that laptop, close them, restart the app, and sign back in.

If nothing changes after those steps, the most likely causes are a damaged local Office activation state on that laptop or a recent sign-in mismatch on that device.
