If the Microsoft account password is not available, the path depends on whether access to the account’s security info still exists.
- Try the Sign-in Helper first. It checks the account email address or phone number and identifies the next recovery step.
- If the password is forgotten, use Recover your account and reset it with a security code.
- If the password is known but the security code cannot be received:
- During sign-in, at Verify your identity, select I don't have any of these.
- Follow the prompts to replace the security info.
- If all security info is replaced, there is a 30-day wait before sign-in is allowed.
- If neither the password nor any security info is available:
- Review the guidance for the Microsoft account recovery form.
- Submit the recovery request through Recover account.
- Microsoft reviews the answers and responds within 24 hours.
- After account access is restored, try redeeming the Rewards points again.
For Microsoft Rewards redemption specifically, redemption can also fail if:
- the verification code entered is wrong
- the phone number has already been used on too many Rewards accounts
- a VoIP number is being used
- redemption is being attempted while traveling outside the account’s home region
- a VPN or proxy is masking the true location
For Rewards redemption, a mobile phone or landline number is required. Email verification is not listed as a redemption method.
If account recovery still fails, use Microsoft Rewards Support.
