    Hi D J Goudreau,

To help narrow this down, could you clarify a few details:

    • Are you trying to sign in to Windows itself, or to a specific Microsoft app such as Outlook, Word, or OneDrive?
    • Do you see any error message when entering your password or passkey?
    • If you use a Microsoft account, can you successfully sign in to it from another device using a web browser?
    • Does your laptop accept a PIN, or are both the password and PIN being rejected?

In the meantime, you can try these quick checks:

    1. Verify that Caps Lock is off and that the keyboard is typing correctly (you can test in the password hint field, if available).
    2. If you normally use a password, select Sign-in options and try another available method such as a PIN.
    3. Restart the laptop and try signing in again.
    4. If you can access your account from another device, confirm that the password works there before making any changes.

The exact point where the sign-in fails and any error message shown will help determine whether this is a Windows sign-in issue, an account authentication issue, or a passkey-related problem.

Let me know if you need further assistance, feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Add Answer" if you cannot add comment so your response will be visible. Thanks for your effort.

If the laptop will not accept the password or passkey, use the account recovery path first.

    1. Go to Recover your account: Recover your account
    2. Enter the email address, phone number, or Skype name used to sign in.
    3. Choose where to receive the security code, then select Next.
    4. Enter the requested information and select Send code.
    5. Enter the code in Verify your identity.
    6. Create a new password and confirm it.

If the account is not recognized:

    • Check that the email domain is correct, such as .com vs .co.uk.
    • Check the spelling of the account name.
    • If another alias or phone number is on the account, try that instead.

If the issue is specifically a passkey:

    • On a new device, passkeys may need to be set up again.
    • Set up new passkeys first, then remove old passkeys that no longer apply.
    • If cross-device passkey sign-in is failing, make sure Bluetooth is enabled on both devices, both devices are in range, and both are connected to the internet.
    • If no passkeys appear, make sure the device has a screen lock enabled, such as face, fingerprint, or PIN.

If the message says "You have tried too many times with an incorrect password":

If the account still cannot be accessed:

    • Contact support: Contact support
    • Microsoft support can route the case, but support agents are not allowed to send password reset links or change account details.
