    Hi, @james smith

After reinstalling Windows 11, activation usually returns automatically if the laptop previously had an activated digital license and the same Windows edition was installed.

If it does not activate, the next step depends on the activation error, Windows edition, and whether any hardware was changed.

To help narrow down the issue:

    1. Go to Settings > System > Activation. What exact message or error code do you see?
    2. Does it show Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro?
    3. Did you replace any hardware, especially the motherboard, or did you only reinstall Windows?

Click "Add comment" to let me know.

    Thanks!

If Windows 11 was activated on that laptop before the reset, the most common recovery path is to reactivate it with the same edition and the built-in activation tools.

    1. Check activation status and edition
Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation. Confirm which edition is installed, such as Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro.
    2. Make sure the installed edition matches the license
Windows will not activate if the installed edition does not match the license for the device. For example, a Home license will not activate Pro, and vice versa. If the wrong edition was installed, reinstall the matching edition.
    3. If the device had a digital license before reset
Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to that digital license. If prompted for a product key during reinstall, select I don't have a product key. Windows 11 should activate automatically online after installation completes.
    4. Run the Activation troubleshooter
If Windows is not activated, go to Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot and run the troubleshooter. This option is available only while Windows is not activated. An internet connection is required, and administrator sign-in is required.
    5. If there was a hardware change
If the motherboard was replaced or another significant hardware change was made, Windows may no longer find the original digital license. In that case, use the reactivation guidance for hardware changes. If the OEM replaced the motherboard, the PC should reactivate automatically. If not, a COA card with a 25-character key may be needed.
    6. If a product key is available
Enter it from Start > Settings > System > Activation > Change product key.
    7. If Windows setup or reset was corrupted
A clean reinstall can help, but it is destructive. Warning: deleting partitions removes data on the Windows disk. During clean install, only delete partitions on Disk 0 and do not modify other disks. If there is no product key and the digital license is not linked to a Microsoft account, do not proceed with reinstall until the license is linked.

If activation still fails after these steps, use Get help with Windows activation errors or contact support from the activation troubleshooting guidance.
