Clearing Cache in "New" Teams

Hello,

Quick question that I was hoping to get some help on. With the "New" Teams app, was the cache folder location for the desktop app moved? Previously our organization always used the Microsoft Recommended cache clear for troubleshooting desktop issues.

  1. If Teams is still running, right-click the Teams icon in the taskbar, and then select Quit.
  2. Open the Run dialog box by pressing the Windows logo key  +R.
  3. In the Run dialog box, enter %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams, and then select OK.
  4. Delete all files and folders in the %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams directory.
  5. Restart Teams.

However, since users have started utilizing the "New" Teams app, it looks like those cache folders in "%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams" are no longer utilized? For example, after clearing my cache and relaunching teams, the folder structure was not rebuilt in the "Teams" folder, as it previously way. Instead, there is just one .txt file?

Is there a new location where the cache files are stored for "New" Teams?

Thanks!

    Hello

I’m Adeyemi and I’d be happy to help you with your question.

Yes, you're correct. The cache folder location for the "New" Teams app has been moved. The "New" Teams app is a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app, and it stores its cache in a different location compared to the previous version of Teams.

The cache for the "New" Teams UWP app is located at C:\Users\user.name\AppData\Local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe. You can clear the cache by deleting this folder with Teams UWP closed.

Please replace user.name with the actual username of the account on the computer where you want to clear the cache.

    I hope this helps.

Or to simplify the paths, use environment variables.

    New:

    C:\Users%username%\AppData\Local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe

    Classic

    %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams

Adjusted instructions that cover both app types.

    1. If Teams is still running, right-click the Teams icon in the taskbar, and then select Quit.
    2. Open the Run dialog box by pressing the Windows logo key + R
    3. In the Run dialog box, copy/paste:
      • new Teams app: C:\Users%username%\AppData\Local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe
      • classic Teams app: %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams
    4. Delete all files and folders in the directory.
    5. Restart Teams.

    Awesome, thank you!

I will make sure to give this information to our Help Desk staff.

    Classic: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Teams

    UWP: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe

    Thanks again!
