Using Classic Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
Classic Outlook cannot compose new email
I am using Microsoft® Outlook® 2016 MSO (Version 2608 Build 16.0.20326.20072) 64-bit. I have tried all the suggestions that the community has given to no avail. Created new profile. Started in safe mode. repaired it locally and online. Checked to make sure there was a FORMS2 in the MS directory. I prefer to use Classic because it is easier to read and the interface for Outlook 365 is, IMO gross and burdensome. Anyone have any other ideas? I usually pretty good at this troubleshooting but so far I have not seen any information on what to do when all these options fail. HELP!

2026-09-17T20:24:26.0966667+00:00 Could you describe the specific symptom in a little more detail? Are you able to click New email on the ribbon? Does that open the compose window? Are you able to type in the email window? If you get an error, what does it say?
If Outlook crashes, please share the Windows Event Log details. To get the event log, in Windows Search type Event Viewer, click Windows Logs, Application Log. Look for Event 1001 or Event 1000 at the time of the last crash. Double click on the event to open it and then click Copy. Paste that in Notepad, make any edits and then paste in your response here. Remove any personal information you do not want shared e.g. account name, computer name, etc. The event log may help if it's a known crash and that other users might reference.
If you go to Windows Settings, Apps, Installed Apps, search for Microsoft 365 or just Microsoft and see if you have multiple copies of Office installed? If you have multiple installed, remove the ones you are not using. Multiple installs can cause instability. Its best to only have one copy of Office installed.

2026-09-17T22:13:29.3666667+00:00 It is pretty basic. I installed Classic outlook. I am able to make profiles. I am able to open email. I can configure IMAP and sever settings. Everything works in Outlook except the NEW EMAIL icon in the left upper corner. There is no error message. It just does not open. I have done all the suggested workarounds and resolutions but to no avail.
Edition Windows 11 Home
Version 25H2
Installed on 3/28/2026
OS build 26200.9457
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.360.0
I checked the event logs for applications but there are no errors. There are no MS365 components in my apps list. However, the MS store says Outlook 9not classic) is installed. When I click open it open the new Outlook even though I can't see it in my apps list. I mentioned that I also did a repair online and it still will not open a new email. If MS365 is in the way, I want it all gone. Apparently there doesn't appear to be any way of doing that. MS365 is as bad as Copilot.

2026-09-17T23:15:27.2033333+00:00 As far as I know there is no current known issue with this symptom. It's not a common issue I recall seeing. Try starting a new email using a keyboard shortcut. The shortcut for New email is Ctrl+Shift+M. Try opening Outlook and doing that shortcut and let me know if you get any error or if that opens the New mail dialog. More shortcuts are here if you want to try any others for comparison, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/outlook/keyboard-shortcuts-for-outlook. For example, use Ctrl+Shift+B to open the Address Book dialog for comparison.
The next thing I would check is if you are signed in to Office properly and is the product activated. If it is not activated and its past the trial time, then New email stops working. To check this from Outlook click File, Office Account. Under User Information are you signed in with the account you bought Office with? Under Product Information are there any messages about activation? If there are any issues on this dialog try signing in again to Office.
The next thing I would double check is Add-ins. I know you already tested Safe Mode. Sometimes an add-in might still be loaded in Safe Mode. From Outlook click File, Options, Add-ins, next to Manage COM add-ins click Go.
Do you have any add-ins different than below? If so, uncheck that add-in and restart Outlook and test.

1 -- I assume you can do Reply and Forward OK?
2 -- Can you get a new email from the New Items menu?
3 -- Do a new Post in this folder?
4 -- Using the Message form directly?
Next phase would be to create a small Outlook VBA program:
That traps the
Inspectors.NewInspectorevent to see if it is even being fired.A Public macro (which you can run from the Developer -> Macros list) that executes
Application.CreateItem(olMailItem)to see if the standard UI is just failing to execute the method. Please advise if you want to continue.

2026-09-18T13:37:44.17+00:00 Thank you for all the advice. I tried to follow along but as I did, I begam to realize it isn't just the NEW EMAIL button but several buttons are all greyed out. All the suggestions you gave failed because those buttons like Reply or Reply all, Forward. When I click open New Items, most things are greyed out.
I have no add-ins. For some reason my Hotmail account at least lets me check for add-ons when I do not see. Your interface is very different from mine. There are 3 IMAP accounts that I use through Comcast. One through MS. The canned answer given by the MS techs does not work. Apparently they don't read whet I posted because as I said, I had already done all that I can. The Classic Outlook tells me it is not activated. But if I try to activate it, it tries to install Office 365. I DON"T WANT 365. I just want the stand alone Classic Outlook. I swear, MS keeps changing things with the excuse it improves the platform. I was a tech support at MS many years ago when Win95 was released. I was was Subject Matter Expert in Operating Systems and Networking. This was long before Active Directory. So things have changed... for the worse. Now they are forcing end users to spend more money or the system breaks.
I have completely uninstalled Classic Outlook and rebooted. Then I downloaded again the Classic Outlook from the MS site. Nothing is working. I am going to have to troubleshoot this further. I am not able to receive any emails with any of them but the MS account. The others will not work. I am going to have to look at other alternatives to my email but I WILL NOT ever buy 365. If they force me to, I will move to a MAC.

Not sure I understand. My pics are from the latest MS 365 Classic Outlook for Windows Version 2608 Build 16.0.20326.20072. Same as what you reported.
It would seem that you have the latest Click-To-Run Outlook. Not the older Office 2016.
The Classic Outlook tells me it is not activated.
That would account for most of the problems you are seeing. You are in "reduced functionality mode"
Then I downloaded again the Classic Outlook from the MS site.
And then you did the "Activate Office" section?

2026-09-18T16:20:26.2333333+00:00 I understand what is happening and I agree with you that the reason is I do not have Office365 and I am trying to avoid putting it on my system. It keeps wanting me to purchase a plan and I refuse to feed the monster. I had Classic Outlook on here and I accidently clicked the icon for the new Outlook. It launched fine. No issues. I don't want to use the new outlook. It is gross. So I closed it and tried opening my Classic Outlook and that's when it crapped out. I uninstalled the new outlook yet again Outlook Classic failed. I am left searching for a new mail client. I do have Gmail and at least can communicate that avenue. Thank you for all the advice. Your knowledge is A1.

I had Classic Outlook on here
If you have a Office 2016 license registered to your Microsoft Account, or have a Office 2016 Product Key, you do not need to pay anything or subscribe to anything.
Some Office 2021, Office 2019 and Office 2016 products come with a product key. If yours did, before installing Office for the first time, sign in with an existing or new Microsoft account and enter your product key at office.com/setup. Redeeming your key is what links your account with Office so you only have to do this once.
If Office originally came pre-installed and you need to reinstall on it on the same device or a new device, you should already have a Microsoft account associated with your copy of Office. This is the account you'll use to install Office

2026-09-18T17:26:13.21+00:00 I think I understand the issue now. Since Outlook is not Activated it will not let the commands on the ribbon work.
I know the Outlook naming conventions are confusing. On Windows now there are two Outlooks. There is classic Outlook that you are trying to use. There is the new Outlook which now ships with Windows and will replace classic Outlook. These two Outlooks are compatible so you can run them side by side. You don't have to use both, just saying that you can if you want to.
If you buy M365 subscription, that gets you both classic Outlook and new Outlook. Classic Outlook no longer ships in the box, but as you noted it's a free download after you have M365 subscription. This also allows you to run Office and classic Outlook on multiple machines.
The alternative is to buy a perpetual license. You pay for it once and use it until that version goes out of support. It will only enable Office install on one machine. If you need two machines you need to buy two perpetual licenses, etc. I would recommend Office Home and Business because it comes with Outlook, https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/p/office-home-business-2024/cfq7ttc0pbm7?msockid=3c9a3a78b85862f221ba2df2b9706306.
Edit to add Outlook Standalone if you only need Outlook, https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/p/outlook/cfq7ttc0pbmd?msockid=3c9a3a78b85862f221ba2df2b9706306.
I joined Microsoft in 1997 working in support in Las Colinas. Back then I worked on FrontPage, FrontPage Server Extensions, IIS, IEAK. We might have worked on cases together. Hopefully we can get you working properly with classic Outlook. I still use it myself but keep new Outlook running too.

2026-09-18T19:59:25.2533333+00:00 After so much troubleshooting it appears that the only thing I can do is find a different mail client. I'm retired. I live on a fixed income. I simply do not purchase software on an annual basis. I geek a lot. I don't need office 365. I don't want it. There are alternatives and I am sure I can find them. Microsoft. The corporation that seeks to pick our pockets. Screw em. Thank you for the advice. It was helpful. Honestly, I thought I had purchased a subscription of 365 a couple of years ago but cancelled it after a year. I will just use the web version when I log into Comcast. I actually use Gmail more than comcast anyway. I probably work this issue until it's dead. At least I might find a workaround. I have found (and scanned for viruses) a lot of software in newgroup servers. It's been a while but I might hop onto one of those as a research item.
Again, thanks!

2026-09-18T21:19:26.5266667+00:00 For your circumstance the best option will be to use new Outlook. You have it installed already and you can add your Outlook.com account and your IMAP accounts for free. You only have to pay when using M365 business accounts. The great thing with new Outlook is that for IMAP it can sync both contacts and calendar which classic Outlook never could. Even if new Outlook does not feel as good as classic yet, it is getting all of the huge investment and is getting better by the day. If for any reason that does not work out Thunderbird is another good third-party option.
