My acc is the family administrator and I own a family subscription for 5 people.

Recently, i've managed to exclude my a barely used account to add my wifes account, so she doesnt need to pay extra to have a individul license.

Her personal license expires on 22 september. My family account expires on july, 2027. I'm trying to send her the activation link for the family subscription repeatedly. Sending direct via email, creating a link and sharing, opening in new, Incognit browser and login in. Nothing. All the way, we receive 'Sorry, something went wrong'.

She is already a member of the family. But doenst seem to be possible to share the license with her.....

    Hello,

If a Microsoft 365 Personal subscription is currently active on the account, the user cannot join a Microsoft 365 Family subscription.

Once the Personal subscription expires, create a new Microsoft 365 Family sharing invitation and send it to her. She should then be able to accept the invitation and join the Family subscription.

    Share your Microsoft 365 subscription

Use this checklist for this exact scenario:

    1. Confirm the subscription type on the owner account. Sharing is only available for an active Microsoft 365 Family or Microsoft 365 Premium subscription. On the owner account, go to the Microsoft 365 sharing page and verify Share is available.
    2. Verify the wife’s account is not still tied to another family group. If the invited person is already in another Microsoft family group, accepting the share can fail and can show an error instead of completing. The invited account must leave any other family group first, then accept the invitation again.
    3. Re-send the share from the owner account and make sure it is accepted within 48 hours. On the sharing page:
      • Select Share
      • Use Email invite or Create link
      • After sending, the status should show Pending invite until accepted
      • The invite must be accepted within 48 hours
    4. Make sure the correct Microsoft account is being used when accepting. The invited person must sign in with the same Microsoft account that received or is intended for the shared subscription. If a different Microsoft account is used, the share will not attach correctly.
    5. Check whether the wife is already receiving full benefits from another shared subscription. A subscription cannot be shared with someone who is already part of another shared subscription.
    6. Since she is already in the family group, remove and re-share if needed. If the account is already in the family group but the subscription benefit is not attaching, remove that person from the family group or sharing list, then add and share again from the owner account.
    7. Do not use a product key for this. Product keys cannot be used to share Microsoft 365 Family benefits. Sharing must be done only through the Microsoft account sharing flow.
    8. If the invitation is accepted but the subscription still does not appear, check the invited account’s Services & subscriptions page. After acceptance, the shared subscription should appear there, and the invited user can then install Microsoft 365 from their own account.
    9. If the error continues, use Microsoft Support. For account-level sharing failures such as repeated “Sorry, something went wrong” during acceptance, use Contact Microsoft Support.

    Important details for this case:

    • The wife’s personal subscription expiring later does not block sharing by itself based on the provided guidance.
    • AI features and extended storage benefits cannot be shared; only the subscription owner gets those.
    • Microsoft 365 Family can be shared with up to five other people.
