Hello Microsoft Community,

I need help restoring my legitimate Windows 11 Home activation after updating my motherboard BIOS. I have already tried multiple activation and recovery methods without success.

I purchased Windows directly from Microsoft in 2015, and it has remained activated through several Windows upgrades. I would like to recover my existing license rather than purchase Windows again.

1. Original Windows purchase and upgrade history

On February 17, 2015, I purchased Windows 8.1 directly from the official Microsoft Store.

I still have:

  • The original Microsoft purchase confirmation email.

The original order number and purchase details.

The original 25-character Windows 8.1 product key.

I subsequently upgraded Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 through Microsoft's official free upgrade program and later upgraded Windows 10 to Windows 11.

Windows 11 Home was successfully activated and working normally before the recent BIOS update.

I have used the same Microsoft account throughout this process.

2. What happened

My current hardware is:

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z790 AERO G, revision 1.0.

Processor: Intel Core 13th Generation.

Operating system: Windows 11 Home (Core edition).

In September 2026, I updated my motherboard BIOS from version F13 to F16 using Gigabyte's official firmware.

After the update, Windows booted successfully, but I discovered that Windows 11 was no longer activated.

No motherboard replacement was involved. The physical hardware remained unchanged; only the BIOS firmware was updated.

3. Initial activation error

In Settings → System → Activation, Windows displays:

"We can't activate Windows on this device right now."

Error code: 0x803FABC3

The activation status is "Not active."

4. Activation Troubleshooter

I ran the built-in Windows Activation Troubleshooter.

It reported:

"We weren't able to activate Windows on this device."

I then selected:

"I changed hardware on this device recently."

After signing in to my Microsoft account, the troubleshooter displayed:

"Unable to activate Windows."

"We can't find any devices linked to your Microsoft account that can be used for reactivating the device you're using right now."

However, my computer, named Serhii-PC01, is still listed in my Microsoft account under Devices.

There were previously two entries for this computer. I removed one duplicate, but this did not resolve the activation problem.

The remaining device is still visible in my Microsoft account.

5. Windows license information

I ran the following command as administrator:

slmgr /dlv

The results included:

Name: Windows(R), Core edition

Description: Windows(R) Operating System, RETAIL channel

Product Key Channel: Retail

License Status: Notification

Notification Reason: 0xC004F034

The installed Windows product key is associated with the Retail channel.

6. Manual online activation

I tried:

slmgr /ato

Activation failed again with:

Error: 0x803FABC3

The error message instructed me to run slui.exe 0x2a 0x803FABC3 to display the error text.

7. Trying my original Windows 8.1 product key

I located my original Microsoft Store purchase confirmation email from February 17, 2015.

It includes the original Windows 8.1 product key and order information.

I attempted to enter this original key through:

Settings → System → Activation → Change product key.

Windows rejected the key with the following message:

"The product key you entered didn't work. Check the product key and try again, or enter a different one."

Error: 0x80041014

I understand that Microsoft discontinued the use of Windows 7/8 product keys for new Windows 10/11 activations in 2023.

However, my situation is different: Windows 11 was already successfully activated through the official upgrade path before the BIOS update. I am trying to restore that existing activation, not perform a new upgrade using an old key.

8. Phone activation attempts

I tried running:

slui 4

Nothing happened. No phone activation window appeared.

I then retrieved my Installation ID using:

slmgr /dti

I entered the Installation ID into Microsoft's official product activation portal.

The portal returned the following error:

"Unfortunately, we couldn't verify your installation ID."

The activation process could not continue.

9. Microsoft Support attempts

I also tried accessing Microsoft Support through the official support website and the Get Help application.

However, I was only able to find automated troubleshooting instructions and standard support articles.

I could not find an option to contact a human support agent through chat or submit a private support request regarding this activation issue.

10. What I need help with

I have proof that I purchased Windows directly from Microsoft in 2015, the original product key, and a history of using the official Windows upgrade programs.

Windows 11 Home was fully activated before the BIOS update.

Could someone please clarify:

Why would updating the BIOS on the same motherboard cause my existing Windows 11 digital license to become unrecognized?

Is there a way to restore the previously established Windows 11 digital license without purchasing another copy?

Can Microsoft manually verify my original purchase and previously activated digital license?

Is there an official way to contact a Microsoft activation or licensing specialist directly to resolve this issue?

Are there any additional diagnostic steps I can perform to identify why my existing digital license is no longer recognized?

I can provide my original purchase confirmation, order number, and product key privately to an authorized Microsoft support representative if necessary.

I would appreciate specific guidance on recovering my existing activation, as the standard automated troubleshooting methods have already failed.

Microsoft have now blocked the use of windows 7/8 licences from activating Windows 11. Their original offer in 2015 to 2016 was only for Windows 10 and was not intended to continue going forward.

Their words were "we are closing the loophole that allowed users to continue to activate outside the free upgrade period" .
