    Hi Mark White

You can refer to AI’s answer first, as it provides detailed guidance on the process and the important precautions to consider before deleting the tenant.

I would also suggest confirming whether your intention is to permanently delete the existing Microsoft 365 tenant, or simply to use your existing custom domain with the Microsoft 365 subscription you purchased through GoDaddy. These are two different processes.

If your main goal is to use the same custom domain with GoDaddy, deleting the entire tenant may not be necessary. The domain first needs to be removed from the existing Microsoft 365 organization, including any references to that domain associated with users, aliases, groups, or other Microsoft 365 objects. GoDaddy provides specific guidance for this scenario.

    You can refer to: https://www.godaddy.com/help/remove-my-emails-domain-from-microsoft-41363

On the other hand, if you do intend to permanently delete the old tenant, please follow the precautions and steps mentioned in AI’s answer. Microsoft also notes that a tenant can only be deleted after the required checks have been satisfied, including having no subscriptions or other resources that prevent deletion. Tenant deletion must be performed by a Global Administrator.

Therefore, before proceeding with tenant deletion, I would recommend confirming whether tenant deletion or simply domain removal is required for your intended GoDaddy setup.

I hope this additional information is helpful and if you have any further questions, please feel free to ask via comment section.

If Microsoft 365 was purchased through GoDaddy, the tenant is managed by GoDaddy. To regain full Global Administrator control before deleting anything, the required process is defederation from GoDaddy.

    Recommended path:

    1. Do not cancel the Microsoft 365 subscription first. Canceling before defederation can cause service disruption.
    2. Follow the official GoDaddy defederation guidance referenced by Microsoft: Move my Microsoft 365 email away from GoDaddy.
    3. If issues occur during defederation, contact GoDaddy support.
    4. After defederation is complete and full admin control is available, use the Microsoft 365 admin center to close the business account:
      • Back up any data that must be preserved.
      • Sign in with a Global Administrator account.
      • Cancel the subscription in Microsoft 365 admin center under Billing > Your products.
      • Delete the subscription. It is permanently deleted in three days and enters Deprovisioned state after 72 hours.
      • After 72 hours, return to Microsoft Entra admin center and confirm no subscriptions or required actions are blocking tenant deletion.
    5. If multi-factor authentication blocks account closure, disable MFA for all accounts except the Global Administrator account currently in use.

    Important details:

    • Closing a Microsoft business account deletes information related to the account, including subscriptions, licenses, payment methods, users, and user data.
    • A custom domain must be removed before canceling a subscription.
    • .onmicrosoft.com domains cannot be removed.
    • If manual domain removal is needed, use Help & Support in the Microsoft 365 admin center or Contact support.
