Will I lose previously purchased products (Word, PowerPoint, etc.) if I buy more storage through a Microsoft 365 Basic subscription?

Hello everyone,

A few years ago, I purchased the Office Home & Student 2019 package, which included Word, PowerPoint, and other programs. Now I’m gradually running out of storage space on OneDrive. I’d like to purchase the Basic package, but I’m unsure whether I would lose the products I previously purchased, since they aren’t included in the Basic package.

Best regards,
Yeganeh

Hi, @Yeganeh

No, purchasing Microsoft 365 Basic will not remove your Office Home & Student 2019 license.

Microsoft 365 Basic is a separate subscription that gives you 100 GB of OneDrive cloud storage. It does not replace your existing Word, Excel, or PowerPoint desktop license.

So you can purchase Microsoft 365 Basic for the additional storage and continue using your currently installed Office Home & Student 2019 apps.

Just keep in mind that support for Office 2019 ended on October 14, 2025. The apps may continue to work, but Microsoft no longer provides security updates, bug fixes, or technical support for Office 2019.

Buying Microsoft 365 Basic does not remove previously purchased Office Home & Student 2019 apps. Microsoft 365 Basic is a separate personal subscription that adds 100 GB of cloud storage across OneDrive and Outlook, plus ad-free Outlook and support benefits.

Microsoft 365 Basic does not include the fully functional desktop Office apps. That means it does not replace Office Home & Student 2019 with a newer desktop Office license, but it also does not take away the Office apps already owned.

    Relevant points for this scenario:

    1. Office Home & Student 2019 remains the purchased desktop product.
    2. Microsoft 365 Basic adds storage benefits, not desktop Word, Excel, or PowerPoint rights.
    3. Microsoft 365 Basic includes 100 GB of cloud storage for OneDrive and Outlook.
    4. If more OneDrive storage is the goal, Microsoft 365 Basic is intended for that use.

If the need is only extra OneDrive storage, Microsoft 365 Basic can be added without giving up the previously purchased Office Home & Student 2019 apps.
