When using Microsoft Copilot and exploring an Initial Chat; such provides external to the response, links that a User can access to therein broaden the dialogue of the Conversation | Deep Research. Nature of the inquiry is to orientation that if not immediately selecting the stated links, if re-scrolling to the top and reading through stated explored links is the content of the links held to stasis or does such evolve naturally to sense of Deeper Exploration to the actual follow-on Chat.

Where to a linear conversation format it would be oriented that a User Read every link to arrive at the most explorative therein inquest to naturing of any AI interaction and engagement to knowledge development; beyond that of User contribution to the Chat | Deep Research | AI Dialogue.

Nature of the question is perhaps to where a link is provided; but if a User explores such concepts Deeper or more Expanded, beyond not reading a link whether or not to a sense of a Linear or otherwise Distribution Chain do prior individual links flow or evolve to nature of the therein Deep Research conversation?

Own curiosity and inquiry was relevanted to a User asking Copilot a Deep Research or otherwise explorative question; to where initial Links are provided; but a User bypasses such to read on Deeper to any sense of contextual outlay; where on scrolling back up to the top to click on an initial missed link for further exploration (whilst typically issue specific), if having explored (to a content linear fashion) deeper beyond the basis of such initial conversation, whether or not the initial link is therein retroactively deepened and informed from later explored dialogue to such earlier therein link posturing.

Whilst not having happened often, to some manner of own therein habit, it sometimes happening where on not initially clicking provided links and instead returning to such later; where some same or similared information is therein often repeated to the stated chat as perhaps has been already Self or otherwise explored; where if the links were reinformed from following content such might not happen as much. Whilst reiterated information isn’t bad to consideration of User uptake and learning it can perhaps if overencompassing tax on Users time to any manner of stated chats.

Copilot responses are not fixed snapshots of all linked material in a conversation. The behavior depends on what grounding Copilot uses at the time of each response.

In Microsoft Copilot Chat, responses can be grounded in:

    • current web information
    • available work data
    • specific items explicitly referenced, such as files, people, meetings, emails, and conversations

If specific files, people, meetings, or emails are not explicitly referenced, Copilot tries to determine the best source of data for its response, including work content. That means a follow-up response can evolve based on the current prompt and the grounding available at that moment, rather than staying locked to every earlier link.

In Copilot in Edge, page summarization uses the active tab’s browsing context, including the page URL and page content. So if a link is opened and that page becomes the active context, the response is based on that page information.

For Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat more broadly, Copilot uses the latest information from the web and available work data to generate responses, and it can provide references showing where information originated. Because responses are AI-generated, they can change as the prompt, context, or referenced content changes.

Practical interpretation for a linear research workflow:

    1. A link shown in an earlier response does not by itself guarantee that all later answers remain grounded in that linked content.
    2. If deeper exploration of a specific source is required, explicitly reference that item in the next prompt when possible.
    3. If working in Edge and asking Copilot to summarize or analyze, the currently open page is the relevant context.
    4. Follow-on chat can become broader or shift as Copilot selects from web data, work data, and any explicitly referenced items.

AI-generated content may be incorrect. Read our transparency notes for more information.
