Setting up a outside consultant (external user) with email and calendar access to tenant - license required?

Question

Hi - I have an outside consultant who I want to have working on a project for my company (he has gmail). I want them to have the ability to monitor an email address, as well as manage (set up appointments, manage appointments) on a calendar (probably a shared calendar?) It seems that the only way I can offer this kind of access is to set them up with an account on my Microsoft Office 365 tenant, unless anyone out there has better insight into what I can do for external users that I connect to my tenant. I know that I am able to give external users access to shared folders in Sharepoint, and I've been reading that I can provide them access to a shared calendar (view only, I think), but I have not been able to determine a way that I can let this external user have access/be able to add/edit calendar appointments with just external access.

If anyone there can weigh in on the best way to set up this consultant, I'd appreciate it. I'd prefer not to give them a license and set them up as an internal user, but I do need them to have the ability to manage a project by sending out emails and managing a calendar.

You could set unique permissions for the calendar list specially:

Go to list settings> Permissions for the list> Stop Inheriting permissions> Grant permissions (the default permission is "edit") :

Invite the users you need and they will only have Edit permission for this list instead of other lists and libraries.
