Windows 11 Home won't reactivate after hardware change.

2026-09-24T12:32:06.0766667+00:00

As per the subject. After MOBO and CPU change Windows says it's not activated.

Using troubleshooter returns:

"We can’t find any devices linked to your Microsoft account that can be used to reactivate the device that you’re using at the moment."

Using online activation portal returns:

"We’re sorry, your Installation ID was unable to be validated."

Running "winver" confirms it's Home edition and says it is licensed to my MS Account email (with which I am obviously signed into Windows on this PC; only 2 devices in my acc.: OEM licensed laptop and this desktop).

Exploring any and all support options online and via phone always ends at the online activation portal - cannot figure out any way to chat or speak with a support person. Never got to the option "I am currently suing this PC" (or similar).

I do not have a product key. It was never an OEM licence, we are talking several years old PC I've built myself that has seen all versions of Windows since 7, upgrade after upgrade and I've never before had a problem activating after any hardware changes.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hello

The problem here is not about retail vs. OEM, but because this license was originally a Windows 7 license.

You were able to upgrade all the way to Windows 11 back then, and I believe that's true, but that has changed. Microsoft has closed that upgrade path and no longer allows it. Upgrading to Win11 is only meant for original Windows 10 licenses. Many users who upgraded from Windows 7 or 8 to 11 have run into this same issue and have been told by support that they must get a new license.

The change of policy was announced here and started to roll out Sept 2023 https://devicepartner.microsoft.com/en-us/communications/comm-windows-ends-installation-path-for-free-windows-7-8-upgrade

A few references here, where others shared what support said when they reached out:

Sorry.. I know this may not be the info you hope to hear, but I'm just here to inform.
