Hi

I have a problem with the keyboard on my Surface Laptop 3. Sometimes some of my keys stop working, and then when I rapidly press them, they start working again. It drives me crazy when I'm trying to type fast. My laptop is always up to date, and I use Windows 11, but it doesn't work properly

    Hi mohammad naji,

Thanks for explaining what happens. Since the keys start responding again after you press them repeatedly, I’d like to narrow down whether this is coming from Windows or the built-in keyboard itself.

Which keys are affected and are they always the same ones? Does it happen everywhere, including at the sign-in screen or only in certain apps?

As a quick comparison, please connect an external USB keyboard if you have one. If that works normally while the built-in keyboard continues missing keystrokes, it points more toward the laptop keyboard.

You can also try a forced restart: shut the Surface down, then press and hold the power button for a full 20 seconds. If the problem continues, test the affected keys in Surface UEFI:

    1. Shut down the Surface and wait about 10 seconds.
    2. Hold Volume Up, then press and release Power.
    3. Release Volume Up when the UEFI screen appears.
    4. Test the affected keys where possible, without changing any settings.

If the keys also fail in UEFI, the issue is likely hardware-related and service would be the appropriate next step. If they work normally there but not in Windows, please let me know, as that would point us toward further software troubleshooting.

For a Surface Laptop 3 with keys that intermittently stop responding, the supported next steps are:

    1. Check keyboard accessibility settings.
      • In Windows 11, go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
      • Turn Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, and related keyboard options off if they were enabled.
      • These settings can change how repeated or missed keystrokes behave.
    2. Check for Surface updates in the Surface app.
      • Open the Surface app.
      • Expand Help & support to check update status.
      • If updates are available, select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install them.
    3. Clean the affected keys.
      • Inspect the keyboard for foreign material or lodged debris.
      • Use compressed air to blow dust and debris from the surface and between the keys, or gently vacuum the top of the keyboard using a dusting brush.
    4. If the same keys continue to repeat, drop input, or only work after repeated presses, treat it as likely hardware failure.
      • Microsoft guidance for Surface keyboards says that if a key is not responding or a key press is being repeated after cleaning, the keyboard is likely experiencing a hardware failure.
      • The recommended next step is to submit a service order.

Since Windows is already up to date, the most relevant actions are checking Accessibility > Keyboard settings and cleaning for debris first. If that does not resolve the issue, service is the documented next step.
