I switched devices and OneDrive downloaded a backup but instead of just duplicating files it just overwrote everything I had and now I can't get it back

I have two laptops. I recently used OneDrive to back up my old laptop and transfer its files to my new laptop. However, during the process, OneDrive deleted all the files and data that I had already saved on my new laptop.

I tried restoring the OneDrive backup multiple times in an attempt to recover the files that were originally on my new laptop, but it doesn't seem to work. Instead, it only duplicates the files that were already on my old laptop, so I'm still unable to recover the files that were deleted from my new laptop.

I've also tried restoring the OneDrive backup several times, but every time it just duplicates the files that are already there rather than restoring the missing files.

On top of that, the slider/timeline on the OneDrive website that is supposed to let me select a previous backup or restore point appears to be bugged. I can't properly use it to select an earlier point in time.

Is there any way to recover the files that were originally on my new laptop before OneDrive overwrote/deleted them? Or is there another way to access an older version of my OneDrive files or backup?

    Hi Giovanna Colombo,

If the files that were lost were originally stored on the new laptop, an additional check that may help is whether Windows still has a local copy outside of OneDrive's sync history.

    Please try these quick checks:

    1. Open File Explorer and search for a few of the missing file names across the entire PC.
    2. Check C:\Users<YourUserName>\OneDrive and compare it with other local folders such as Documents, Desktop, and Downloads.
    3. If File History or another backup solution was previously enabled, look for Restore previous versions by right-clicking the affected folder.
    4. If the missing files were recently replaced, avoid creating or moving large amounts of new data on the device until recovery options have been reviewed.

If the files never existed in OneDrive and were only stored locally on the new laptop, recovery would depend on whether a local backup, previous version, or recoverable copy still exists on that device. The standard OneDrive restore process may not restore files that were never synced to the service.

I hope this helps point you toward an additional recovery path. If you can confirm whether the missing files were originally saved in the OneDrive folder or only on the new laptop's local storage, the community may be able to suggest more targeted recovery options.

OneDrive syncs changes both ways, so files from the old laptop can overwrite or remove what was on the new laptop if both devices are syncing to the same OneDrive.

    Try this recovery path:

    1. Use OneDrive on the web as the source of truth.
      • Go to OneDrive on the web and sign in with the correct Microsoft account.
      • Check Recycle bin first and restore any missing files or folders.
      • If the missing files were in Personal Vault, use Show Personal Vault items in the recycle bin.
    2. Check whether the files were saved under a different account.
      • If more than one Microsoft account was used across the two laptops, sign out and check the other account.
      • If there is also a work or school account, check that account too.
    3. If only some files were overwritten or corrupted, restore versions where available.
      • OneDrive supports restoring a previous version of a file for Microsoft 365 subscribers.
      • This is safer than restoring the entire OneDrive when only specific files are affected.
    4. If many files were changed, use Restore your OneDrive.
      • This feature is available to Microsoft 365 subscribers.
      • In OneDrive on the web:
        • For personal accounts: Settings > Options > Restore your OneDrive
        • Select a date such as Yesterday or Custom date and time
        • Review the activity chart and activity feed before restoring
      • Important: restoring sends files or folders created after the restore point date to the OneDrive Recycle Bin.
    5. If the restore timeline/slider is hard to use, use the activity feed carefully.
      • After choosing Custom date and time, select the earliest activity to undo.
      • All later activities are selected automatically.
      • Review the full activity list before selecting Restore, because more recent actions can still be selected even if hidden in the feed.
    6. Know the recovery limits.
      • Deleted files can be restored from the OneDrive recycle bin within 30 days for personal accounts.
      • Files permanently deleted from the OneDrive recycle bin cannot be recovered.
      • Entire OneDrive restore can roll back changes from the last 30 days.
      • Files shared by someone else cannot be restored from a personal OneDrive recycle bin unless they were in the account’s own OneDrive.
    7. If the missing files were originally local files on the new laptop and never synced into OneDrive, check local recovery locations.
      • Check the Windows Recycle Bin on the new laptop.
      • Check whether those files still exist in the local OneDrive folder or other local folders.

If repeated full restores only duplicate old-laptop files and do not bring back the new-laptop files, the best supported recovery options are: Recycle bin, file version restore, Restore your OneDrive within 30 days, and checking the correct Microsoft account. If the files were permanently deleted from the OneDrive recycle bin, they cannot be recovered through OneDrive.
