    Hi,

You can no longer add a phone number in your account. Microsoft is moving away from using SMS for sign-in verification and account recovery on personal Microsoft accounts. The focus is shifting toward more secure options, such as verified email addresses and passkeys, as alternatives to phone-based verification.

For personal Microsoft accounts, adding a new phone number as a sign-in verification method may no longer be available. That is why Account info may show Add email but not an option to add a new mobile number.

    What is still supported:

    1. Go to Security at https://account.microsoft.com/security.
    2. Select Manage how I sign in.
    3. Select Add a new way to sign in or verify.
    4. Available options may include:
      • recovery email address
      • Microsoft Authenticator
      • passkey

Microsoft notes that when adding new sign-in or verification methods, the option to add a new phone number may not appear.

If the goal is specifically to use a phone number with a Microsoft app and the number is already tied to another Microsoft account:

    • a phone number can only be added to a single Microsoft account
    • if Transfer is shown, follow that option
    • if Transfer is not shown, the number was recently used on another account and Change number must be used instead, or wait 30 days and try again

If prompted with Let’s protect your account or Help us secure your account, an alternate email address or phone number can be used for verification, and it does not have to belong to the account owner as long as it is accessible to receive the code.
