I recently upgraded Windows to 11 Pro and I am building a new PC and trying to activate Windows on the new machine. No matter what I do, it will not let me activate Windows and my devices don't even show up when I tell it I recently changed hardware. I don't have a product key because it is a digital license supposedly attached to my account. I'm stuck and I'm already $100 into this with the upgrade. How do I get everything synched up?

Are you saying you paid $100 for the Win11 Pro license? If so, you have the upgrade license, not the full license for Pro.

An upgrade license can ONLY work if it is used to upgrade an "already" activated Home edition. If the new computer doesn't have any license at all, the upgrade license alone doesn't work. Your options is:

Purchase Home license, install as Home, then do the following:

You can go to Settings > System > Activation > Change product key

Disconnect internet, and disable any third party antivirus, key in the generic key instead: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

That should get you to Pro. Once restarted, you can connect back to the internet, sign into your Microsoft account. See if it is activated. If not, go to Settings > System > Activation, run the troubleshooter, choose the hardware change option. When it asks you where it is installed on right now, you should choose the old device name. Then click on Activate button. And on the next screen when it asks you where to transfer it to, choose your new device name.

    1. Confirm the new PC is running Windows 11 Pro. If the installed edition is Home, a Pro digital license will not activate. Check Start > Settings > System > Activation.
    2. Make sure the device is connected to the internet and signed in with the same Microsoft account that holds the digital license. Windows activation requires an internet connection, and linking the Microsoft account to the digital license is essential for reactivation after hardware changes.
    3. Run the Activation troubleshooter:
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot
      • Use the activation troubleshooter from there
      • This option is available only when Windows is not activated, and administrator access is required
    4. If the troubleshooter does not show the old device or does not resolve activation, open the Microsoft Store, sign in with the same Microsoft account used for the upgrade purchase, restart the PC, then check Settings > System > Activation and run the troubleshooter again.
    5. If the edition is wrong:
      • If the PC has Windows 11 Home installed but the license is for Windows 11 Pro, use the troubleshooter option Upgrade to Windows 11 Pro and select Start upgrade.
      • If the license and installed edition do not match, Windows will not activate.
    6. If this is effectively a new device because of a significant hardware change, Windows may no longer find a matching license automatically. If the troubleshooter still cannot find the license after signing in with the correct Microsoft account, the next step is to contact Microsoft support.
    7. If Windows 11 has never been activated on this new hardware and there is no transferable product key available, Windows may require a valid product key for first-time activation on that device.
