Hello Microsoft Community,
I am experiencing frequent, unpredictable system freezes on my Windows 11 laptop. The system becomes completely unresponsive several times a day, and I have been unable to identify the underlying cause.
I have checked Windows Event Viewer, but I cannot find any relevant errors or warnings that explain why the system freezes. This makes troubleshooting particularly difficult.
I am looking for a systematic way to diagnose the problem and determine whether it is caused by Windows, a device driver, RAM, storage, graphics hardware, overheating, power management, or another hardware issue.
Device name: DESKTOP-RAHEM32
Processor: Intel Core i7-8565U @ 1.80 GHz (reported speed: 2.00 GHz)
Installed RAM: 16 GB
Dedicated graphics: NVIDIA GeForce MX150 (4 GB)
Integrated graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 620
Operating system: Windows 11, 64-bit
Storage: 477 GB total, approximately 218 GB used
System architecture: x64-based processor
My laptop freezes completely and unpredictably, several times a day.
When this happens, the system becomes unresponsive. I have not identified a consistent trigger, and the issue does not appear to be limited to a particular application or workload.
The problem is difficult to diagnose because I cannot find any relevant errors in Event Viewer that clearly correspond to the freezes.
I would like to establish whether this is a hard system hang, a graphics-driver timeout, a kernel-level deadlock, a hardware-related problem, or another issue.
I have checked Windows Event Viewer, but I have not found any relevant events that explain the freezes.
My questions are:
Can Windows 11 freeze completely without recording any errors in Event Viewer?
Could Windows be unable to write diagnostic information because the entire system has become unresponsive?
Which logs should I inspect besides Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application?
Should I investigate WHEA-Logger, Disk, Ntfs, Display, Kernel-Power, or other event sources?
Is there a way to determine whether the system is still running in the background when the screen becomes unresponsive?
A. Diagnosing a hard freeze
How can I distinguish a complete system hang from a graphics-driver failure or a display-only freeze?
Are there keyboard shortcuts or other methods I can use to determine whether Windows is still responding?
Is it possible to capture diagnostic information while the laptop is frozen, before I have to force it to shut down?
B. Memory and hardware
What is the recommended method for testing my 16 GB RAM for intermittent hardware errors?
Is Windows Memory Diagnostic sufficient, or should I use a bootable memory-testing utility?
How can I check whether the SSD is experiencing errors or intermittent timeouts?
Are there built-in Windows tools that can identify hardware-related instability?
C. CPU and GPU
Could a problem involving the Intel UHD Graphics 620 and NVIDIA GeForce MX150 cause the entire operating system to freeze?
How can I investigate graphics-driver timeouts, GPU-related hangs, or conflicts between the integrated and dedicated graphics drivers?
Could CPU/GPU overheating or power-management issues cause these symptoms?
How can I monitor CPU and GPU temperatures, clock speeds, and other relevant hardware information?
D. Windows diagnostics
How can I configure Windows 11 to collect useful diagnostic information during a system hang?
Would enabling automatic or kernel memory dumps help in this situation?
Is there a supported method to manually trigger a memory dump when the computer becomes unresponsive?
Can Windows Performance Monitor, Reliability Monitor, or Windows Performance Recorder help identify the cause?
E. Drivers, BIOS, and Windows
Could outdated chipset drivers, graphics drivers, storage drivers, or BIOS/UEFI firmware cause unpredictable freezes?
What is the recommended order for checking and updating these components?
Should I investigate Windows system-file corruption using DISM and System File Checker?
How can I determine whether a clean boot or Safe Mode helps isolate the cause?
My main objective is to identify the root cause rather than repeatedly reinstalling Windows or replacing hardware without evidence.
I would appreciate a recommended diagnostic sequence, starting with the safest built-in Windows tools and progressing to more advanced debugging if necessary.
I am willing to collect system reports, check hardware health, run memory tests, investigate drivers, and share relevant diagnostic results.
If there are particular logs, commands, or diagnostic utilities that would help Microsoft support identify the cause, please let me know.
Thank you for your time and assistance.
