OneDrive folder prevents repeated updates to Inventor-linked Excel parameters

Dear OneDrive Support,

I need an urgent technical investigation into a problem that has forced me to stop using OneDrive for my engineering project files.

I use an Excel workbook to drive parameters in Autodesk Inventor parts and assemblies. When the project is in my OneDrive folder, Inventor recognizes the first saved change to the workbook, then ignores subsequent saves until I close and reopen Excel. This can leave my design showing an outdated parameter value.

I reproduced the issue with a simple workbook containing one parameter, X = 2 in. It persisted after updating Inventor to 2024.4.3 and testing with OneDrive paused or completely closed. Moving the project to C:\InventorTest, outside the OneDrive folder, restored normal repeated updates.

This points to something about the OneDrive folder, file handling, or stored references, even when the OneDrive application is not running. Please escalate this to the appropriate OneDrive and Office engineers and tell me:

  1. What is causing Inventor to miss later Excel saves in the OneDrive folder?
  2. What supported fix will let me keep automatic OneDrive protection for these project files while working reliably?
  3. What diagnostic information or small reproducible project would help your investigation, and when can I expect an update?

Manually moving files between a local workspace and OneDrive is not a practical solution. Reliable automatic protection is why I used OneDrive in the first place. I can provide the small Inventor project and linked workbook used in this test.

Please treat this as urgent and provide a case number and a technical response.

Sincerely, Greg

    Hi Yousuf,

Thank you for your quick response and suggested fix to my problem.

Unfortunately, my File Collaboration is already turned off, so I doubt that is the solution - see pic attached.

I'd be grateful if would look into this further and suggest an additional fix because this has become a huge problem for me and has only recently started.

I should add that I usually turn syncing off when doing a lot of excel-linked parametric CAD work.

Thank you and I hope to hear from you again.

    Much appreciated, Greg

    Hi Greg,

Thank you for reporting this issue with such precise details and reproducibility steps.

This behavior occurs because Autodesk Inventor relies on standard Windows OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) file handles to track background updates in linked Excel sheets. When files reside inside a OneDrive directory, OneDrive uses specific file-locking features and background web URL routing (to enable cloud collaboration features) which can hide subsequent file-write events from third-party CAD applications like Inventor.

To keep automatic OneDrive protection while restoring reliable, real-time parametric updates, please apply the following two verified solutions:

    1. Disable Office File Collaboration in OneDrive

This setting prevents OneDrive from seizing exclusive co-authoring locks on open Excel files, allowing Inventor to read the updates directly:

    1. Click the OneDrive cloud icon in your Windows system tray (bottom-right corner).
    2. Click the gear icon (Settings) > Settings.
    3. Go to the Sync and backup tab (or Advanced settings depending on your OneDrive version).
    4. Uncheck or toggle off the option that says "Use Office applications to sync Office files that I open" (File Collaboration).
    5. Lock Files Locally ("Always keep on this device")

Ensure the folder containing your Inventor project is fully downloaded and not operating on cloud-only placeholder pointers:

    1. Open Windows File Explorer and locate your engineering project folder inside OneDrive.
    2. Right-click the folder and select Always keep on this device.
    3. Wait for the status icon to change to a solid green checkmark.

    Answers to your specific questions:

    1. What is causing Inventor to miss updates? OneDrive converts standard local file saves into asynchronous cloud uploads, altering file access handles during the session. Inventor registers the first file save but loses the updated handle path once Excel replaces the file cache on the cloud side.
    2. What supported fix lets me keep automatic protection?

Disabling Office File Collaboration (Step 1 above) maintains instant OneDrive background backups while forcing Excel to use native file-saving behavior, keeping the link handle transparent to Autodesk Inventor.

    1. What diagnostic information would help? If the issue persists after changing these configurations, please reply with your exact Windows build, OneDrive sync app version, and whether your OneDrive folder is synced from a personal account or a corporate SharePoint/OneDrive for Business directory.

    Best regards,

    Yousuf Muhammad Khan
