I have gone thru all the steps you talk about. but on the very last step it says We couldn't find an account with that username. but if I go to microsoft.com my account pops up in the top right corner, if I click on it my account opens.

If the account opens but the password is no longer accepted, use the account recovery flow instead of a normal sign-in.

    1. Go to Recover your account and enter the email address, phone number, or Skype name used to sign in.
    2. If the account is recognized, choose where to receive the security code, select Next, enter the requested information, then select Send code.
    3. Enter the code in Verify your identity, select Next, then create a New password.

If the reset page says it can’t find the account:

    • Check the email address carefully, including the domain such as .com vs .co.uk.
    • Check for name spelling differences such as rachel vs rachael.
    • If another email alias or phone number is on the account, try that instead.
    • Use the Sign-in Helper tool to check the account details and get guided recovery steps.
    • If the message is still “We couldn't find an account with that username”, contact support and report that the username has stopped working.

    Also note:

    • If the account has not been signed in to for more than two years, it may have been deleted and can no longer be reopened.
    • If the password is known but it stopped working, the Sign-in Helper tool is the recommended next step.
    • Support agents cannot send password reset links or change account details.
