Yes. In Exchange PowerShell, preview the Dynamic Distribution Group membership by reading the group’s filter and then asking Exchange which recipients match it.
For an existing dynamic distribution group:
$ddg = Get-DynamicDistributionGroup -Identity <DDGIdentity>
Get-Recipient -RecipientPreviewFilter $ddg.RecipientFilter -ResultSize 100
If the group uses a specific recipient container or OU, include that scope:
$ddg = Get-DynamicDistributionGroup -Identity <DDGIdentity>
Get-Recipient -RecipientPreviewFilter $ddg.RecipientFilter -OrganizationalUnit $ddg.RecipientContainer
What to look for:
- If the new user appears in the output, Exchange currently considers that user a member.
- If the user does not appear, the user does not match the effective filter or is outside the group’s recipient scope.
Important checks based on common causes:
- In Exchange Online, DDG membership is calculated and stored, then refreshed at least once every 24 hours. A newly created or newly modified user might not receive messages until the next refresh even if the attributes now match.
- If the DDG is scoped by
RecipientContainer, only recipients under that OU/container are evaluated. Users in another OU won’t be included.
- In a hybrid deployment, if the DDG was created before hybrid and the filter includes only mailboxes, migrated users can become
MailUser objects in the on-premises directory. In that case, update the DDG filter to include mail-enabled users, while preserving any existing recipient filters. Warning: Set-DynamicDistributionGroup replaces the existing recipient filter with the value provided.
Example hybrid fix:
Set-DynamicDistributionGroup -Identity ******@contoso.com -RecipientFilter {(RecipientType -eq 'UserMailbox') -or (RecipientType -eq 'MailUser') -or (RecipientType -eq 'MailContact')}
If the goal is only to test whether the user matches the rule, the Get-Recipient -RecipientPreviewFilter ... output is the direct verification step.
