Hello everyone,

Hope you are all keeping well. I am looking for advice from anyone who may have encountered a similar issue with Microsoft Universal Print / Secure Print and Canon printers.

Since configuring Microsoft Universal Print / Secure Print, our printers have been intermittently displaying the following messages on the device panel:

  • "Universal Print - An internal error occurred"
  • "Universal Print - A server communication error occurred"

What's confusing is that:

  • The printers remain online in the Universal Print portal.
  • They continue checking in successfully.
  • They are shared and available to users.
  • Printing sometimes works normally despite the errors being displayed.
  • Using the same QR Code some users can print while others cannot.
  • The issue can disappear temporarily and then return without any obvious changes.

Troubleshooting Completed

So far we have:

  • Restarted the printers multiple times.
  • Replaced and tested network cables.
  • Moved printers to different switch ports.
  • Verified DNS, firewall rules, and connectivity to Microsoft cloud endpoints.
  • Confirmed the latest firmware is installed.
  • Reviewed printer logs and application logs.
  • Tested communication between the printers and Microsoft services.
  • Worked with both our Canon Support Team and our managed service provider.

Findings

  • No network issues were identified.
  • The printers appear healthy and online in Universal Print.
  • Communication tests complete successfully.
  • No obvious authentication or connectivity failures have been found in the available logs.
  • The printers continue to display the two Universal Print error messages.

Questions

  1. Has anyone seen these specific "Internal Error" and "Server Communication Error" messages with Universal Print?
  2. What was the root cause in your environment?
  3. Are there any logs or diagnostics we should be checking that we may have missed?
  4. Would re-registering the printers with Universal Print be recommended?
  5. What steps would you recommend to permanently resolve and prevent this issue?

Any suggestions, recommendations, or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Kind regards,
Shyam
