Outlook stuck on Task Bar

Outlook app appears to be active on the task bar; but won't come up enlarged on the main screen. I have gone to Task Manager and closed Outlook out and restarted the desktop computer, twice, to no avail - still didn't work. Any suggestions?

It sounds like Outlook may be opening off-screen or remembering a bad window position, especially if it shows as active on the taskbar.

Try clicking the Outlook icon on the taskbar to make it active, then press Windows key + Up Arrow to maximize it. Microsoft also supports Windows key + Shift + Left/Right Arrow to move the active window between monitors if it was positioned on another display.

If that doesn't bring it back, press Alt + Tab to make sure Outlook is actually the active window, then try the same shortcut.

If Outlook still won't display, I'd try starting it with Outlook /safe to see if an add-in or Outlook startup issue is involved. Microsoft recommends Safe Mode as a troubleshooting step for Outlook startup problems.

If you have more than one monitor connected, I'd also temporarily disconnect the second monitor and try opening Outlook again.

Since ending Outlook in Task Manager and restarting the PC did not help, try these steps for Classic Outlook:

    1. Check whether Outlook is hidden in the notification area.
      • Look at the system tray near the clock.
      • Select the Outlook icon there.
      • If Hide When Minimized is enabled, select it to turn it off.
      • When this option is on, Outlook can keep running but disappear from the taskbar when minimized.
    2. Start Outlook in Safe Mode.
      • Press Windows + R.
      • Type outlook.exe /safe and press Enter.
      • If Outlook opens in Safe Mode, the issue is commonly caused by an add-in.
    3. Disable COM add-ins if Safe Mode works.
      • In Outlook, go to File > Options.
      • Select Add-ins.
      • At the bottom, choose COM Add-ins and select Go.
      • Clear suspicious add-ins, select OK, then close and reopen Outlook normally.
    4. Check whether Outlook is blocked by an open dialog box.
      • Press Alt+Tab and look for any hidden Outlook prompt or confirmation window.
      • If a dialog box is open, Outlook may appear stuck until that prompt is answered.
    5. Check whether Outlook is busy with a large operation.
      • If Outlook is moving or deleting many messages, it can appear frozen while still working.
      • If Outlook is visible at all, check the status bar and give it a few minutes to finish.
    6. Repair Office if the problem continues.
      • Close all Microsoft 365 apps.
      • Open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
      • Right-click Microsoft Office 2016 and select Change.
      • Run the repair, then test Outlook again.

If the Outlook icon is visible in the notification area but not on the taskbar, the most likely cause is Hide When Minimized being turned on.
