Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
To activate Office on a new Windows laptop, use the path that matches how Office was obtained:
- Open any Office app such as Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
- If prompted, sign in with the Microsoft account, work account, or school account that was used to buy or subscribe to Office.
- If the Activation Wizard appears, follow the prompts to complete activation.
If Office was pre-installed on the new laptop:
- If the device included an Office purchase or offer, activate by signing in with a Microsoft account. The digital product key is sent to the PC, so no printed key is needed.
- If the screen shows a trial version and there is no Office product associated with the account, choose one of these options:
- start the 1-month Microsoft 365 Family trial
- buy Microsoft 365 or a non-subscription version of Office
- add Microsoft 365 to an existing subscription
- enter a new product key
If a new product key card was purchased:
- Redeem it at Office.com/setup or https://microsoft365.com/setup, then follow the on-screen prompts. After redemption, the product is added to the Microsoft account and can then be installed and activated.
If Office is already installed from a one-time purchase such as Office 2021, 2019, or 2016:
- Open an Office app.
- In many cases, Office activates automatically after accepting the license terms.
- If not, complete the prompts in the Activation Wizard.
If activation fails on a brand-new PC with pre-installed Office and error 0xC004F200 appears:
- Make sure the laptop is connected to the Internet.
- In the Windows taskbar search box, type Activation.
- Select See if Windows is activated.
- Under Windows activation, confirm it says Windows is activated.
- Then reopen Word, Excel, or PowerPoint and follow the prompts again.
If Outlook, Access, or Publisher are missing on a new PC that included Office, activate Office first, then check again.
