Is there a policy for the number of source control repositories to use for my software?

If I have a very large software suite which produces a large number of libraries and executables, is their a policy/guidance as to how many repositories I should use to store my code?

The only downside I can think of to using a single large repository is that the commit history might get quite difficult to read on individual folders.

All input welcome!
