SQL Server 2016 active/passive cluster with availability groups to third server

In a setup of a two-node (active/passive) SQL Server 2016 cluster, is it possible to use Availability Groups to replicate the cluster databases to a third node on a different subnet? All three servers would be Win2019 in an FCI.

Hi PhilipsKeith-1816,

Yes, I think it is feasible.
But note that only one FCI partner can host a replica for a given availability group. When an availability replica is running on an FCI, the possible owners list for the availability group will contain only the active FCI node. And FCIs do not support automatic failover by availability groups, so any availability replica that is hosted by an FCI can be configured for manual failover only.
Please refer to Prerequisites and Restrictions for Using a FCI to Host an Availability Replica and Failover Clustering and Always On Availability Groups which might be helpful.

Best Regards,
Amelia

Hey,

The following guide should help with configuration:
https://www.starwindsoftware.com/resource-library/starwind-virtual-san-sql-server-hadr-using-availability-groups-and-failover-cluster-instance/

In addition, you can use StarWind VSAN as a shared storage to configure SQL FCI:
https://www.starwindsoftware.com/resource-library/starwind-virtual-san-installing-and-configuring-sql-server-2019-tp-failover-cluster-instance-on-windows-server-2016/

Thanks for the response, Alex! Unfortunately, I'm just a lowly US government contractor, and the agency I work for isn't open to suggestions regarding how storage is managed.
