SharePoint Versioning + OneDrive sync question

Hi there,

Hoping someone can clarify this. We have various customers that use SharePoint libraries synchronised to staff devices with the OneDrive client. In most cases we enable major versions on the library so users can rollback files in the event of issues.

In some cases (where libraries/folders are growing quite large) we would like to have greater control over the versioning process, ideally keeping "milestone" changes to files but trimming out smaller autosave changes in between.

Is this something that can be achieved through enabling minor versions? The important thing is that this doesn't cause disruption to users or introduce additional steps (e.g. check out / check in) to the save process.

Also can someone explain how the major/minor versions work in the context of OneDrive sync? When does it decide to create a new Major version instead of a Minor version?

Thanks!

    Hi @Oliver Lennox ,

Per my knowledge, we are not able to control when and how versions are created, they are created by default every time we edit and save a document. When you enable minor version setting, users don't need to check out or check in. Only if you enable "Require Check Out" in version settings, documents will need to be checked out before they can be edited.

If you are using Sync setting in SharePoint online, it will be a two-way synchronization of files and folders between SharePoint document and your computer. So you will get all your version setting from your SharePoint online.

    For Reference: Versioning in SharePoint
