folders missing when i open vs code and theres no trace of it. whats causing this?

Question

So i started using vs code and saved all my files in the vs code folder itself. It all worked just fine until one day i open vs code and all of my work went missing. whats the cause of this problem?(program using c and downloaded mingw on my hdd not my main idk if this do anything)
