It looks like Windows Cumulative Update KB5007186 has broken office on my laptop.
I have done another restart and no change.
Clicking on any office app displays this message
Followed by (referring to whichever office app is clicked on) NB The first message of this kind related to OneNote which I had not clicked on and do not use.
Normally if an update is in progress I will see something in task manager and indeed on the taskbar. Neither Task Bar or Task manager (under apps) shows any updates in progress . Is there something I should be looking for under Background or Windows Processes?

Should I uninstall office and reinstall? If so, do I need to remove device as once of my licences first?
Try uninstall the update and restart your PC and see if the problem persist?
If not, then open the Microsoft Office and update it and restart your PC and then run the Windows Update and reinstall the update.
Dear "Community EXPERT"
For the first time in my experience, MS has completely disabled all my Office apps. Each attempt to open results in the "Updating Office" splash screen, followed by the 0000142 error as above. Perhaps step back in your advice...1) Try to uninstall????; Exactly how does one uninstall this? Is it the Windows update or the Office update? 2) Open the Microsoft Office and update it? What is "The Microsoft Office?" How does one open apps that fail to open?
