Process Explorer is running hot. Constant 25-27% of CPU cycles

I have used Process Explorer for years. Today it is running hot, taking a steady 25% to 27% of CPU cycles. What might be causing that? The result is that with other things running (and not much) my CPU is maxed out at 100% near constantly.

This is with both v-16.42 and v-16.43 (updated just now). And no change after a reboot.

I have three PE icons in my system tray, and my selected columns are Process, CPU, Shared Commit, i/o reads, i/o writes, description, company, autostart location, and PID. That is my standard setup of long standing.

Any idea what may amiss here?
