File links in SSRS reports

I asked this question in the SSRS forums and was led here. Why do SSRS links to SMB files not function in Edge like they did in i.e.?

I read your original post, it seems that the link you want to open in the website is file protocol link file:///. Correct me if I'm not right.

As far as I know, it is the expected behavior that browsers don't permit web pages to link to file:// URLs unless they were themselves loaded from file:// URLs. This is as a security precaution, as web pages running from file:// have permissions to read any file on your system. You can also refer to this thread.

I think you can only open it in Edge or Chrome if it doesn't use file protocol.

We had to install the extension you referenced thank you. Both Chrome and Edge work again.
