Windows update failing: 0xC8000222

I've been trying to resolve an issue with Windows Update failing on my system (Win7 Pro 64bit).  The last time updates ran successfully wsa 7/13.  I'm running Norton 360 and spent an hour with their tech support person before he gave up on me.

Any point in the right direction would be much appreciated.

    Hi,

    ·         Which updates are failing?

    However, you may try these:

    1)   Run Windows update troubleshooter.

    2)    Reset Windows Update Components.

I had the same problem while installing Visual Studio 2010. It was failing in .net framework 4.0.

I tried downloading .net framework 4.0 separately and install but problem persisted.

The problem was basically of Windows Update. Windows update was not working properly and

asking for "check for updates" was giving error "service not running" where service was running properly.

So to sort out that issue I ran following commands and windows update problem sorted out and in turn visual studio 2010 problem also.

    Click Start

    Type: cmd

Right click on cmd in start menu and select 'Run as Administrator'

    Type: net stop wuauserv

    Hit Enter

    Type: ren c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old

    Hit Enter

    Type: net start wuauserv

    Hit Enter

    Type: exit

    Hit Enter

I had already tried option 1 and had no success.

Option 2 did the trick with using the "Aggressive Option".  Thanks to both of you for the speedy reply and the resolution.

For any others having the same experience and to answer PA's questions.

This is a new laptop with Win7 64 bit installed by the manufacturer (HP)

The Norton is a full license version purchased with the PC

I was able to update norton with no problems.  One action that I did take with Norton that may have helped the resolution is that I turned off the automatic program control for the firewall and granted the microsoft components access when prompted.  My guess is that Norton blocked one of the windows components and got the service in to an inoperable state... just a guess though.

Please answer all of the following questions by number in your next reply (no need to quote this post):

    1. Did you upgrade to Win7 64-bit or is it a new computer?
    2. Have you purchased Norton 360? (Is it really Norton 360 or is it Norton Security Suite freebie from your ISP?)
    3. Did a Norton 360 free-trial or a McAfee free-trial come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it?
    4. Can you update Norton 360 manually (i.e., via LiveUpdate) successfully?
