Hi Susan! I'm John, a fellow Microsoft user like you.

Thank you for reaching out to the Community. I'm here to help you with this.

If you're seeing a message saying "Task Host is stopping the shutdown," it means a background process managed by the Windows Task Host is preventing your computer from shutting down properly. Windows updates or software downloads happening in the background could be holding the shutdown process.

Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:.

    Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter:

    > Go to Settings (Win + I). > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.

    > Find Windows Update and click "Run" next to it.

    > This will open the Get Help app.

    > Scroll down and look for "Troubleshoot problems with Windows updates"

    > Click it and select "I can't download, install, or uninstall an update" and click "Yes".

This will automatically identify and address any errors and restart the update process. This step is purely automatic. Please continue to follow the prompt if the issue persists.

Install all update available: Go to Settings > Windows Update and make sure your system is fully updated.

    Check if issue persists.

If the issue persists, please provide more details by answering my questions.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

I tried this. It did not solve the problem. Was transferred to online chat but the wait time is 45 minutes. I can't wait that long. Microsoft please provide a user-friendly solution right away. Thank you.

Did anyone find a solution? It does not seem that we can contact Microsoft directly - they removed the ability to request a call back from their support desk and I'm left going round and round in circles on their site. Incredibly frustrating.

Tried your fix but just got stuck on checking for updates. History shows history of successful installations, last on 14/2/2025. This problem started very recently - a few days or a week at most. Bit of a relief to see others with the same issue. Any other methods to stop this?

    Regards Joan
