If you can read data cd's and dvd's, it is working ok. There is no dvd video player in win 8 and also no dvd burning software included in windows 8. You need to find a video player. VLC is a free dvd player.

Windows 8 should supply the win 8 drivers. Check the compatibility center HERE.

I am fairly positive that this is in fact a driver issue:  I have the same drive which works properly on my win 7 laptop.  It does not on my Win 8.1 laptop (which is the laptop without an optical drive that I got the drive for).  All I get is MT1887 driver error, which I can't figure out.

Trash the Samsung and don't ever consider buying another one of their devices.  There are many other alternatives out there and Samsung seems to want to be close-to-the-vest with their products.  I just went through tremendous monkey-motion to unlock one of their external SSDs.  I had to contact the factory, download some proprietary software, and have several unnecessary interactions with customer service to unlock a drive that I OWN!  They produced a product with the SE-208 that they decided didn't need to have Windows 10 support, even though it would just require a driver update.  Since they think they would rather have their customer base buy new hardware, just because it's too much trouble to launch an update, I'll just go with another manufacturer for everything I buy in the future.  Consider doing the same.  Sony was they same way with the Beta Video format.  Let them eat their hardware!

I confirm. The Samsung SE-208 does not work on Windws 8.1 (my MS Surface Pro 2 and my wife's Asus T200-TA). Before, it worked on my Samsung laptop on Windows 7, and now it  only works on my son's PC on Windows 7.
