Why can’t VS use this standalone license?
Since Subscription and Standalone license are different, probably you need to activate VS by using Product Keys(Perhaps you need to call to Microsoft Store Support).
Do I really need a subscription?
No, I think. Both Standalone and Subscription license should work.
Is Visual Studio and Microsoft account two separate things?
Not exactly, as you can choose a Microsoft account or a work or school account to sign in corresponding version of Visual Studio.
